As a PC gamer used games don't affect us since PC games can't be used. The issue of simple though. Publishers just need to allow developers time to make a decent SP, a well developed MP, and don't take out any content for DLC and maybe people would buy their games new.
I remember comic books getting the same treatment back in the 70's. The older generation said they were corrupting the youth and turning them into murders and the same thing happened with video games. I bet in the next 10 to 20 years saying playing a FPS makes someone want to go and kill a bunch of people will sound as stupid as saying reading a batman comic with the joker can turn people crazy lol.
For everyone saying I didn't read the article I read it, just read it fast lol. Anyway I still say DLC is going to get worse next gen. In addition to possibly charging us to download the games voice acting and music next gen what else could they do? Make all side quests DLC? Trophies/Achievements can't be unlocked unless the you buy a DLC patch that unlocks them? I wouldn't even be surprised if EA makes importing your saves from Bioware games a form of DLC.
Corrupt EA executive 1: "cutting out content to charge as DLC was a great idea for our games. Now we can charge people a full $60 for an incomplete game and then turn around and sell the cut content for $10 each making even more money" Corrupt EA executive 2: "Ya and don't forget the online passes. While they don't make us much ad DLC it was a great idea to add multiplayer to more games simply to charge for an online pass to go with used copies" Corrupt EA executive 3: "What else can we do to rip off gamers? We have done DLC and the online passes but we need more. Hmmmmmm....by god I got!!!" Corrupt EA executive 1 and 2: "What? What is your idea?" Corrupt EA executive 3: "Ok listen to this. First we charge people to play online if they buy the game used right? Then we cut content out to re sale and make a pure profit on right? Well How about now we just put the most basic story elements in our games? So for Mass Effect 3 make Bioware change the opening to already be at the start of the Reaper Invasion and have Shepard have been in jail, already back on Earth, and this James Vega guy who Shepard knows pretty well. Then if anyone wants to know more, which they will, they will have to buy comics, novels, and movies. Add DLC and online passes to the mix and we could be making $200 or more per game" Corrupt EA executive 1: "Your a genius, I can't believe we didn't think of this sooner." .
@rogue81 I think the fear comes from how if skipping through the game play option to just see the story becomes a norm it will affect games even more. Just look at how COD has changed the FPS genre and even RPG's have been drastically changed simply to appeal to more people. Going back to the COD example we have seen how Activision has put little effort into the campaign because not as many people play it as compared to the multi player. So because of that the single players has little effort put into it and there is more focus on multi player. Now imagine if it becomes possible to fast forward a game. When publishers find out more causal gamers and women are doing that then they could actually put little effort into game play and more into the cutscenes and story. The game play could become very basic and a game like Arkham City could result in its game play segments each being just a long 5 minute hallway in between each cutscene. Also for RPG's if you could just fast forward how would leveling work? Would you just get exp for fast forwarding? If so how much? Would it affect character level? Would you be strong enough to do side quests? Couldn't people just skip all the fighting to just get the exp and watch the story? Again if more people start doing that then game play could suffer. I think that is the fear these crazy fans fear. While I agree with the things I mentioned being bad I still don't support what those fans did.
I don't agree with what those fans said but what she said really was stupid. If you don't want combat then either play a game like heavy rain or catherine or watch a movie. Game companies need to realize that us fan are getting tired of games becoming dumbed down for every common denominator. I know they need to make money there is only so much we can take of our games becoming milked products which are made for nothing more then a quick buck.
