One of my guys (I work with disabled adults) is a fan of older systems. I know nothing about this one. Wiki'd it but that's about it.

Any ideas regarding prices for games? TRS specialty sites? Or any brick and mortar stores that carry this stuff in NYC metro area (he doesn't have a credit card)?

thanks!

If you want to play earlier survival horror games get Clock Tower for ps1, and if you have a PAL compatible ps1, Hell Night is also recommended. The 2 Fear Effect games are amazing, too. If you haven't played them, the Parasite Eve games are also very impressive, if a little bit more on the RPG side of things.

Check my collection too. I have most of them.

Advent Rising's a good call. Very halo-like, but surprisingly decent game.

Yakuza 2. Just bought it. First one is one of my favorite games. Ever.

To say I'm enthused that Sega released this is putting it mildly. I think I've finally forgiven them for failing to support my DC. And not re-releasing PDS. And not supporting the Sega Cd, 32x, and half the other hardware I've bought from them. If they keep releasing great action/adventure/RPG games like Blood Will Tell, Yakuza and Otogi, it's kind of hard not to love them.

"I collect films that come from the Giallo genre"

Interesting. You see Argento's new movie? I haven't seen it yet. I'm a big fan of his. Was going to see it with my gf at the time. Broke up before we got around to it. Forgot about it.

You collect the paperbacks or just movies?

I collect antiquarian books. Mostly mid to late 18th century American textbooks and late 19th/early 20th century Prussian and Weimar philosophy and concordant cultural criticism from later on, books relating to the history of where I live and out of print literature of philosophy.

Also a big comic strip fan i.e. Dilbert, Boondocks, Calvin and Hobbes.

Mistmare - 1.7

It's the worst RPG I've ever played. I've played some bad ones too. The game makes Dungeon Lords look positively awesome by comparison.

I might have Big Rigs at work, too - I haven't played it - it says 18 wheel something so it might be 18 wheeler. I didn't even think that it might be that until now. It's a pretty bad game from when I've seen students play it. I bought a bunch of jewel case titles for work so I probably have some real dregs, not listed.

....that's what happens when they give you a $50 software budget and your machines are 10 years old.

After that I think it's Countdown Vampires with 3.3 - IMO, it's bad, but not that bad. To be frank I don't even think it's that much worse than the original (non-DC, non analog controller) RE which is, IMO, the most overrated horror game of all time.

What's the worst reviewed GS game? Big Rigs?

Try the Wii, esp the wii zapper or whatever it's called (the included zelda game is dynamite).

My parents, (disabled adult) students, and brother really like that. Not gamers, at all.

I wouldn't go with No More Heroes. While I'm sure it's a great game, it has a story, which requires a commitment of sorts that a new gamer might not be willing to give. It's also very male oriented, if it's anything like Killer 7.

Other than Wii, I'd recommend more adult-oriented adventure games like The Longest Journey, its sequel Dreamfall, the Syberia games and PC adventure games that are pick up and play, and relatively free of misogynism. Most are also available for xbox.

Maybe puzzle games too. I've never met a woman that didn't like Tetris or Lumines.

If she liked HM, go with that. Also try the The Sims, Jurassic Park: Project Genesis, Thrillville and Sid Meier's Pirates if she likes strategy/sim kind of games. I hear The movies was rather good too, but I haven't played that one yet.

If they're good, I do and I would. I have a DC, I'd like to eventually get a SS, more or less for PDS. If I ever make a lot of money, I'd pick up a neo-geo. I have a Sega CD and 32x. 32x is a flop if there ever was one.....

IMO, NGP still has the best analog stick of any handheld. Big fan of MS for that system.

There's a reason a lot of flop systems flopped. I'd buy a Virtua Boy, but the thing gives me a headache. IMO, the CD-I was garbage so I wouldn't buy it.

I think that is a result of people going something like this in their heads:

Wow that's like 500 games! A new game is what? $50? So 500 x 50 = $25,000. Holy crap that's a lot of money! This guy must be rich!

But what they fail to understand is that the games were acquired over time, and that not all the games were full retail. And even then not all games at full retail are $50. Most of my collection was acquired less than $10. And considerable amount was under $5. But they don't really see that.

duncanr2n

Same thing with me. I was sick of giving people the, "I only spend $5-10 for each game, I don't buy them when they first come out.". I got sick of explaining and don't want to seem like a braggart , so I don't mention it to people anymore. I just mention "I have a few games for 'X' system. What are you looking for?"

With my books, it's worse - I collect antiquarian books. I swear to God, if you ever mention that as a hobby 90% of people assume you're a millionaire. Absurd.

I have Drake. I bought Drake less than three months ago, when the fact that it may be the worst game ever produced was widely and legendarily known. I should have known better...I bought it anyway.

jsmoke03

It could be worse. I bought Drake because you said you had Drake.

+ Buying only "good" games -- games that received an average of 8 or more from the critics regardless of whether I would ever play it. This used to be much more important to me. I didn't want to have any "bad" games in my collection. However, this changed due to the realization that some games I really love got poor review scores, so scores can't always be trusted. someNONSENSE

This was what happened with me. I only wanted "good" games, but then I too realized that the critics were not necessarily on target in terms of what I enjoy.

whats weird with me is that gs is pretty close to what i figure a games should be rated as. It was actually more accurate when gregk was around but generally if it got a 8, then i usually enjoyed it... thats why i said good games that i wanted to play. i don't care what the score is if im not interested. its why i'm not picking up bioshock...it just doesn't look interesting to me.

I tend to disagree, but then again I'm not really in GS target demo. IMO, their reviews of survival horror are, well, quite bad. I prefer Chris's Survival Horror Quest. GS compares everything to resident evil, then list the genre conventions (i.e. puzzles, inferior weapons, lack of action, intentionally poor aiming) as flaws. Their adventure game reviews do the same thing. They generally fault the games for using lateral thinking puzzles and more or less for not being console action games. Their CRPG reviews are OK, but their D&D game reviews are generally riddled with inaccuracies (see: Dragonshard).

Anyways, did you like System Shock 2? If so, get Bioshock. It received a lot of hype, but it's really, really good. It's not as good as System Shock 2, but what is? I've played lots and lots and lots of horror games. This is one of the better ones in recent years. Doom 3 was the only game that got the System Shock 2 vibe down better. It's more sci-fi than horror, but it's a real winner if you like horror, FPS, or adventure games.
