I'd always play it safe considering you have a nice lot of hardware in your comp. I think Nvidia have a list of recommended PSUs on their sites for each card but you'll have to hunt for them. 550W to me seems a little low, but if you have a quality PSU then you might be able to risk it, but personally I wouldn't Nice OC on your E8400 by the way! What mobo/cooler are you using?
I'm in the same boat, I need an upgrade to a Quad for rendering but they seem more expensive than the i7's. All the q9550s I've seen have been on low stock in most online stores so I'm guessing there won't be a price drop as they won't be manufacturing any more.
If AMD manage to get their drivers on par with the level of Nvidia then I might be tempted to buy, but I've always preferred and bought Nvidia for that reason (I've had experience with both companies). Plus CUDA is a big seller for me personally. But wow, if these cards are as powerful as they sound AMD have really outdone themselves, just hope the drivers are up to scratch.
I have that case! I love it. I like your cable setup - running everything behind the motherboard tray. How do you put the side of the case back on? I've tried what you've done but the side of the case doesn't go on very well.
