An i7 is total overkill for games. Core 2s are fine. Even the i5s are a bit unnecessary but they might be worth a look as they are pretty cheap atm.

sup machine b : Well if you overclock : core i7 920 is far from being a Overkill Processor specially with incoming game and if you want to play at 1680x1050 & higher such as 1920x1200 / 2560x1600 / Dual monitor setup / High Multisample AA such as SA from ATI : super anti aliasing

But if you want to save money Even tough that already that core i7 920 D0 Stepping = 4.2ghz OC + X58 at 200-250$ + DDR3 at 60-80$ is a Great deal compare to Before at lauchhttp://www.bit-tech.net/hardware/cpus/2009/09/08/intel-core-i5-and-i7-lynnfield-cpu-review/7
Also Keep in mind that Core i7 and is extra core / L2 Cache / High Ghz since it can reac h4.2ghz Quite Easy Compare to Before with is New D0 Stepping

I belive the more the game are going to be devlop to work with dX11 and NEW GPU / Window 7 the more i think they will be optimize for Quad core Such as Phenom II X4 955 & Core i7 / Core i9 / And not forgeting those who as Q6600 / Q8400 / Q9550

But core i9 at Start will be a Extreme = 900$ price Range : then they will do the High performances : and the mainstream such as Core i9 *20 instead of *65

And topic Creator ? you should not get 285GTX when 5850 1GB is pretty much better for 280$ but if you want HD5870 it 380$ and again stronger
unless you want that bad those Ageia PhsyX effect : All motherboard from x58 Support Crossfire & SLI KEEP THAT IN MIND

Get the 5850 instead of the GTX285 if you can...

wow, your from Australia, that system must have set you back atleast 2k or something, the 5850 won't be here for another 3 weeks probably, we get everything late/slow/overpriced.

Even so its worth waiting 3-4 weeks for the 5850 since its a much better GPU ( second fastest single gpu after 5870) at a bit lower price ( if you can afford 100 get the 5870) and it supports dx11 at a hardware level Also that i7 is a bit overkill but imo good investment since it will be more future than lets say an older quad core and certainly much more future proof than dual cores. Still though bit expensive and imo is better to get an i5 which the fastest model is within 90-95% of the i7's performance for $50-60 less
