So, last night I got my Winter Survival set-up ready... Got my XBOX, NGC, PS2, and Dreamcast out and set them all up, attatched to various CRTs I've been hanging onto...

I played about an hour of "007: Agent Under Fire" on my GameCube, followed by some "Baldur's Gate: Dark Alliance"... There are certain games which I like to play at certain times of year... For an example, I generally run through "Metal Gear Solid" (PSOne) every Summer. I've done it every year since the game was released. I think one of the games I will be running this Fall is "Lord of the Rings: The Third Age" which I scored in the Spring against all odds, from my local used store...

What else should I be looking to play this Winter? Anyone got any Fall traditions? I have already been told I need to play "Twilight Princess" from one friend. I'm definitely going to play "Eternal Darkness", as it has been almost a decade since I last played it...

What do you think? What are your Winter Games?

:D

I didn't realise there was a 4th Tak game til just a few days ago. Colosseum and Cold Fear are games i've wanted for a while but til now have been just out of reach in price.

I hate you... Been lookin' for a copy of "Cold Fear" forever...

:D

(I don't do the eBay/Amazon thing, I like to find them out "in the wild" - It's about the hunt, not the eventual kill, for me!)

If you choose "Download In Background" after purchase, the file will automatically pause, with no hiccup or corruption, until you can re-establish connection. Just always choose that when you buy something, and you should be fine.

Eternal Darkness and Beyond Good and Evil are great. Really great.

It's a wonder that I haven't played Eternal Darkness yet, since I've always loved the Gamecube. That's first on my list for next legacy game to get for sure.

"Eternal Darkness" is just an amazing piece of programming. So many games have tried to toy with the mind of the player i.e. the experience of hallucinating, or going crazy, but ED actually pulls it off PERFECTLY. There is so much to love about that game, seriously. They nailed just about every aspect of the game, it's a high watermark which hasn't been cleared by anything I have played since.

And "Beyond Good & Evil" will make you laugh, it'll make you cry (in sympathy, not frustration)... It's one of the finest action-adventure games ever. Controls like a dream, great characters... Perfect difficulty balance... Another of my Top-10 Games of All-Time.

;)

In a way, I'm glad that there hasn't been a direct sequel to either game yet, as well... I would hate to have them tarnished by a sub-par follow-up.

Wii with GameCube support... Then ignore all Wii games, and buy NGC titles, and VC stuff... GameCube is by far the best of all those systems, for me, it's the pinnacle of Nintendo.

;)

I know there will be SNES fanatics who won't agree, and the odd N64 nut... But I loved the NGC best of all those.

You absolutely MUST get "Blast Corps"... It may look like a stupid idea on paper, but in execution, there is no more addicting title on the system. It is AMAZINGLY fun, trust me and just buy a copy.

Also, though many poo-poo it, I really enjoyed "Star Wars: Shadow of the Empire".

Well I'm not into the Mario kart or Kirby air ride games. I'm more into realistic type racing games like burn out or need for speed.

The only racing game I have is hot pursuit 2 which is fun once in awhile.

Are the NASCAR games any good?

Dirt to Daytona is pretty much the only race sim on the system and apparently it comes close to even PC's 2003 Season which is often considered the best NASCAR sim to date.

Here's a vid showing the "hardcore mode" physics:

"Dirt to Daytona" is EXCELLENT... It captures the sport and the science behind it extremely well... I would definitely score "Dirt to Daytona" over "2005: Chase for the Cup", but of all the EA NASCAR games, that one is the best hands-down (HUGE NASCAR fan, here). I also second the "BurnOut" series as a suggestion!

I've played Soul Reaver 2 before but i think i wasn't very impressed with it. Though i'm not against giving games a second trial, i have had my mind changed by others in the past. Wolfenstein was good on the PC, allegedly not so much on PS2. But for the miniscule prices of most PS2 games nowadays it's not even a "risk" to try it.

Also unbeknownst to me at the time, that spree has now pushed me past the 300 PS2 games mark. :D

Whomever said that is full of it... It's an awesome game on the PS2.

;)

I think it's outstanding. Graphics, gameplay, being able to save ANYWHERE... It's just one of those diamond games, in the rough of that gen. Also outstanding for the time/platform, was "Cold Winter"... Do you own that one? It's fairly unsung.

I gave Wolfenstein a whirl last night, had a great time in the first level. I'm beginning to understand that Gamespot reviewer's (especially for FPS's) are a bit on the dim side. 4.9 is what they gave Wolfenstein and while i've only sampled a small portion of the game, it all works, the presentation is decent, there is AI, and (big WIN in my book) the controls are totally customisable. Even though it's far too early for me to score it, it's definitely not a sub-6 game!!

Yes, Cold Winter is probably my favourite purely-single player FPS on the PS2. While other games tried to do other things and succeeded/failed with varying degrees, Cold Winter didn't really try to do anything new yet delivered a very satisfying and fairly lengthy campaign, just by keeping it simple.

Another largely-ignored one is "Darkwatch", but you don't tend to miss great games so i expect you've got that already. ;)

Oh, absolutely! Great horror-tinged FPS, a lot of fun!

:D

"Cold Winter" was a great story of revenge, and it pulls no punches on the violence & 'adult' content... The MP is sorta fun, and it has 'bot matches, which is always a "win" in my book. I have played through "Cold Winter" several times, which is a stand-out quality.

;)

A shopping spree indulged in:

£15 in total for them all. Typically half of them weren't on my list.

BarbaricAvatar

Excellent finds, especially for the price! I'm playing through "Soul Reaver" (the first game) right now, and it has held up remarkably well! Never played the second one. "Wolfenstein" is one of the best FPS of that generation, probably in my top-5 of all time.

;)
