I've owned an Xbox 360 since 2005 and I am thinking of buying a PS3 for the 1st time. I don't play online much anymore so I cancelled my Xbox Live Gold subscription last year. I want to buy & play GTAV and Splinter Cell Blacklist online but would rather not pay the $60 (in Canada) for an Xbox Live Gold membership but rather put that $60 towards a PS3 console.
So is online multiplayer on the Playstation Network still free? YES.
I think I remember from E3 this year where Sony announced you'll have to upgrade to PSN Plus or some other fee to play online multiplayer on PS4, so will that extend to PS3 gamers anytime soon? NO.
Also, how does PSN multiplayer compare overall to Xbox Live? Depends on the game. No Cross-Game Chat, and stuff like CoD get maps a month after they've been released for XBL.
Does the PS3 come with a mic for online play (thinking of buying the new GTAV PS3 console bundle), or do many people use voice chat online on PSN? Get a decent headset with stereo game-sound, blu-tooth ear bugs are terrible and folks will mute you if they hear too much background noise or TV feedback, which is often a problem with cheap-o ear bugs.
Should I just bite the bullet and pay the $60 for XBL Gold, especially for Splinter Cell? This is the PS3 forum, we don't have a legitimate opinion on such matters. Follow your heart. :)
