@Pedro: It's a bit more complicated than that. Steam sure does maintain a good part of the pc gaming marketshare as it is, but Valve remains a player, like Gog or Origin. Microsoft owns the arena. They own Directx, they have the power to sabotage the competition.
Microsoft is introducing a new format that would replace executables, undermining years of structure for both game fixes and content mods. Under that new platform, games would stop existing as software that endure the way it currently does. Games would be something you pay for, and then you would be ecouraged to buy the dlc and move on to the next big thing.
Now that's something that works great on consoles. Xbox players have been fed that business model for well over 10 years and can't get enough of it. PC gamers have much different expectations. With a bit of help from the community, i am able to enjoy and replay older games not meant to still be playable.
At any rate, it is unlikely they will succeed in making this new format a standard, but it's still scary that they are trying.
