Yup. Right before the western launch of the Dreamcast one of the rental stores I used to go to had a rental promotion for the system and Sonic Adventure. I remember marathoning what I could without a memory card.

I veer more towards single player now. Multiplayer's great for sure but the longevity of a good multiplayer game often varies sadly. Single player remains permanently relevant though.
Killzone, Rayman, and MGS. The Rayman and MGS ports are competent and Killzone is a hell of a portable FPS and something that was long overdue in the handheld field. I'd go with those three.
If this is your first major foray on the PS line then it wouldn't be a bad choice, you have access to a hell of a wide library. This is just a small assortment of things I'd say to consider across all sorts of genres (which are you into anyhow?), there's so much across the three libraries that if it's all new to you I'm sure you'll find something of interest easily:
Vita: Dead or Alive 5+, Dragon's Crown, Killzone Mercenary, Littlebigplanet Vita, Metal Gear solid HD Collection (4 games), Need for Speed: Most Wanted, Ninja Gaiden Sigma, Persona 4G, Rayman Origins/Legends, Sonic All-Stars Racing Transformed
PSP: Castlevania: Dracula X Chronicles, Dissidia Final Fantasy 012, Grand Theft Auto (2 Stories games and China Town Wars), Resistance Retribution, Tekken 5DR/6, several Ys games,
PS1: Crash Bandicoot 1-3, Final Fantasy 7-9, Resident Evil 1-3, Silent Hill, Tomba 1&2, Vagrant Story
That said, don't rule out a 3DS either if it's possible to get one later down the line. Having them both reinforces the endless entertainment you'll have, but I say start with the Vita for now. There's so much to discover within just the PS1 section alone.
I remember hearing about plans for this so long ago but nothing ever came of it, just like the supposed RE & DMC PSP entries. It's impressive just to see it actually existed at some point and it could've been a milestone of sorts in the handheld scene as WRPGs on handhelds seem elusive.
The 3DS Mega Man Legacy Collection is finally out (at least physically anyway), so it's time for me to go back to the beginning. It has me wanting the ZX games as well as a handheld collection for the X series. Meanwhile in the old but not too retro yet I've been revisiting BioShock on PC.
As said, go in order, they're each worth a round. I'm actually revisiting the first one now and it holds up well. By chance did you also get the DLC? BioShock Infinite - Burial At Sea was fairly interesting if you finish up all three entries.
I'd put the X and Zero series towards the top for me. I never got to get hands-on time with the ZX games (which is something I do want to do when I return to DS games). You point out one thing about the franchise I've always held as true, every Mega Man series has some fantastic tracks. Whether it be the classics, the X series (geez I love the X series OSTs), or so on, they've always had some really good VGM.
I'm looking forward to the 3DS Legacy Collection next week (though I wish it stacked up more to the old GC/PS2/XB Collection), I do wish there was a true portable X Collection as well though.
The oldest I've ever had is probably a front loader NES, though with me at this moment it's the SNES.
