You should try to narrow down your problem by eliminating some variables.

Does this happen with all of your controllers?

Does it happen on both controller ports?

Does the problem correct itself if you remove and reinsert the controller plug?

No, the PS2 will still only output PS1 games at 480i, I have heard the PS3 does upconversion but I don't have one and can't really say how well it works.

I think your best bet for playing PS1 games on a computer monitor would be to use a video processor that will handle the conversion and scaling for you, I just found one in the garbage a few weeks ago and have been using it for this exact purpose. In all honesty though, unless you have a really nice processor/scaler (expensive) PS1 games will still look better on any old TV.

I usually only eat while playing turn based games, which are very easy to eat during. Although, towards the end of FFXII when my party was leveled up pretty high and I had the gambit system wired, I would even get up and go make a sandwich while my party kept battling stuff.

I remember trying to play Kingdom Hearts 2 with a PS1 Dual Analog controller and the game wouldn't recognize it. I think the DualShock 2 controller is a little bit different in how sensitive the buttons and sticks are, so the old controllers won't work with all PS2 games. I have never heard of it actually being harmful to the system though.

The most irritating problem is that party members will not avoid traps even when they have Libra active, you have to either manually move each character around them, or cast float on the entire party.

Also, I thought the battle system was really lacking the ability to assign actions for all of your party members without having to exit and re-enter the menu. During many battles I was constantly double tapping x when executing a command so that I could get back to the menu and choose actions for my other characters. Meanwhile, little bits of time were usually lost because the characters were already initiating their gambit commands.

Ideally, I would want to have a switchable mode (mostly for use in boss fights) where all gambits are turned off, and each time a party members action meter fills, the battle automatically pauses and brings up the menu for that character (kind of like in FF Tactics). That way you have full control over all actions being taken, and no time is wasted trying to override gambit actions or having characters stand idle while waiting for commands. Being able to queue actions for party members would also be cool, as opposed to relying on gambits all the time.

All complaints aside though, I thought the game was excellent. Yes, even the plot, (which is not highly regarded to say the least) there is always room for improvement, but even with its flaws this is still probably my favorite RPG on PS2.

For people who are used to nothing but action games, playing a turn based RPG for the first time might seem dull and archaic. Its kind of a difficult genre to jump into if you haven't played anything from it before. These games are primarily about strategy, and are not meant to provide the same level of excitement you will get from an action game. (although they can at times)

It's kind of like the difference between two people sitting down and playing chess, and two people going ouside and whacking each other with nerf swords. The nerf battle will obviously provide a more visceral combat experience and get your heart rate up, whereas the chess game will offer greater depth and be a more intellectually engaging process. Neither of these are necessarily better or more fun, but they exist for different reasons and serve different interests.

Some rpgs which are closer to real time or action combat will frustate new players because they seem limiting or contradictory. Many people have commented on the seeming disparity between being allowed to move around freely in FFXII, but not being able to dodge attacks. If you really want to see what turn based rpgs are all about, save yourself the confusion of the hybrid systems, and try a turn based strategy game like FF Tactics or Disgaea. Give it at least an hour or two, and if you still don't like it you should at least be able to see the logic behind why these rpgs are turn based.

I think you are right though about action rpgs having a greater potential for mass appeal, and after the success of kingdom hearts it seems game developers have realized this too. The trend in rpgs over recent years has been moving away from strategy and towards button mashing. It seems like most of the slower, strategy oriented rpgs are being pushed onto the handhelds, and it remains to be seen if turn-based games have a viable future on the next-generation consoles.

In short, don't believe the hype.

For me there are just too many reasons to not buy a next-gen system now, and too many great games on PS2 for me to hang it up. I haven't been playing PS2 for that long so its all still pretty new to me, but I have actually been playing more PS1 games recently which are nearly a decade old and aren't any less fun now.

I think its best to choose a console closer to the end of its cycle; everything is much less expensive, there are way more games to choose from, you can pick the console that has the games you want to play (not the one you think is going to get the games in a few years), and you will be buying later revision hardware after all the bugs have been worked out. Its going to be years before I buy a new console; but unless there is a game out which you are just dying to play, I would reccomend you wait a while, your end of the deal only stands to get much better.

I think there was some kind of collectors edition for XII that came with an additional special features DVD. If I am remembering this correctly it just had extra stuff like concept art, trailers, and "behind the scenes" type videos.

EDIT: Here is some info about it from IGN.
