@camambert2 @maltnut @Shadownk I think the better word would be "engagement" rather than "fun". After all, Spec Ops: The Line was certainly not fun, but pretty damn engaging nonetheless.
@akassassin11 @ck10304 @Kamilus360 It's actually rather easy to explain. It's dripping with atmosphere and has astounding depth and complexity provided you can break through the wall that is the first 5 hours.
@killafolston God of War, as far as I remember, constantly gives you new weapons and provides an upgrade system that has a substantial effect on the gameplay, unlike Ryse's. It also has a more diverse range of enemies besides "Dude with sword" and "Dude with axe".
@espiranza88 Half Life had variety. Yes, you still shot dudes, but the variety in enemies and environments caused you to constantly change your tactics to accommodate, thus ensuring you never got bored. The original Modern Warfare also did this effectively by alternating you between a guns blazing Middle Eastern warzone and a nighttime sneaky mission as Soap MacTavish. You were still shooting dudes, but in different environments and with different tactics.
