I didn't realize how many PC gamers own Wii U. I mean, it totally makes sense. You can play the major titles on PC and use the Wii U for the change of pace casual gaming.
I'll own a Wii U at some point, I have no doubt about it. My best guess is that I'll buy on Black Friday of 2017 or so.
I bought the Wii in 2011, and promptly blew through Skyward Sword and Twilight Princess, then knocked out Mario Galaxy and Galaxy 2, a short stint with Smash Brothers, DK Country, and then messed around with Sports Resort for a while. Finally geeked out on Kart for a couple weeks and boom. Done. I sold it back to Gamestop about 6 months later with a decent trade in deal and was out.
That's the thing about Nintendo games.....they don't have to be the latest game to be good. So you can wait a few years to try them out. But there's no reason to get in now and sit on a console that you'll use for a couple of weeks in a row every few months or so. Just wait and go on a Wii U Binge.
@sagejonathan @CyDidley I see your point, and if the XBOne was a pile of garbage, then I probably wouldn't buy it. But remember, as I said, I've owned the PS3 and Wii, so I'm not married to MS or anything.
As Jess pointed out, there's not much difference in hardware, I don't really care about price, or the controller. I'm only going to buy 1 of them at first. It will almost surely be the XBOne because of the foundation they build in the social aspects of the last gen.
I hope the PS4 makes a comeback in the social side of gaming this time around. And maybe my son will like the PS4...or PS5.....but for an old guy like me, I'm probably stickin to the Bone.
My decision is going to be based on my multiplayer friends list.
Last gen, I owned both PS3, Wii, and XB360. I found that the multiplayer experience on XB360 completely destroyed the other 2. My NHL hockey club started back in NHL '08 and has stuck together for 5 years. I picked up other many of my other friends in COD dating back to World at War playing zombies together.
I've never met most of these guys, but we've known each other so long, there's no way that I can just give up the dozens of close friends on my XBLive friends list. Most of them haven't moved to next gen yet, but of those that have....ALL of them are on XBOne.
So, for Sony, this console war was over before it started.
I'm actually surprised that the Kinect 2.0 wasn't rejected by MS executives based on this issue alone. How can you possibly expect to have 100% voice recognition with so many accents/dialects in the world. This concept should have been killed before it started.
You could run a whole test on the US accents alone, Boston, Chicago, Southern, California all have different accents. And that's not even taking into account hispanic, asian, black and indian variations of them. I hadn't really even thought of the global part of it. wow.
My last-gen experience almost exactly mirrors Danny's, as I also primarily used PS3 for Netflix, Blu-Ray, and PS3 Exclusives, while I used my XB360 for my primary gaming console for everything else.
I have dozens of XBLive friends built up from FPS games, Sports games, on top of my real life friends. I really don't care either way between XBOne vs PS4, but I can't imagine giving up an established friends list, and moving to PS4 to start from scratch.
PS4 is going to have to pull a pretty sizable turnaround in the online multiplayer aspect of things for me to do that. I just don't see it happening. Sorry.
