Hmmm... I've looked at Ratchet an Clank and see two problems-

1.It's not on the 360

2.It doesn't seem much like a platformer, in the same way that SW: Force Unleashed wasn't a platformer. I think people just see cartoony characters in a 3rd person perspective and think 'platformer'.

I'm not saying that you can't have weapons etc in a platformer, that's fine. What you do need is PLATFORMS, between which the character is meant to navigate. A platformer should be essentially a virtual obstacle course, like Takeshi's Castle.

I do accept that Prince of Persia and Mirror's Edge are essentially platformers, but Mirror's Edge is in 1st person so a little odd. I guess I just want Mario on the 360! lol I know, your gonna say "get a bloody Wii then, idiot", but I can't afford to go buying every console out there just to get a couple of games. I had a Wii but sold it cus once I'd beaten Mario Galaxy everything else was crap. I love the 360 and most of its games. I just feel that it really needs to diversify a bit. The PS3 has a more diverse library than the 360!

Also, if developers are happy to replicate FPS and Racers ad nauseam, why can't they do a few similar platform games! Surely Microsoft can see from the success of Mario Galaxy that a classic platformer done well can still sell millions?

EDIT: I realise that you weren't suggesting R&C as a 360 platformer, but rather as an example of what can be done this gen.

check out ... Arkedo Series 003 PIXEL ! on Xbox live

DecadesOfGaming

Seriously dude, he's not talking about some indie xbox live arcade game that looks like something from the early Super Nintendo days..He's talking about a good platformer that takes advantage of the 360's hardware capabilities. The way Little Big Planet and Rachet and Clank did platforming wise for Sony.

O.K..

Consider myself better informed now you've spoken on behalf of the postee.

lol

Well, to be honest gamer082009 is right- I am after a new 3D platformer that uses this gens power to its full potential. But I still like 2D platformers too, and that Arkedo looks quite cool. Thing is though is that there are plenty of 2D platformers out there especially on xbl. I've played BK:N&B which looked amazing and is just how I want my next gen platformer to look like. Unfortunately, though BK:N&B isn't a platformer. I'm gonna check out Spyro Dawn of the Dragon which looks good, but again seems more 'action/adventure' than platforming. I think part of the prob is that developers seem to always feel like they need to do something completely new and innovative and so neglect to make a proper platformer. What we need is a game that is still a fundamentally a platformer, but brings innovative aspects to the genre, rather than replacing the fundemental mechanics of platforming. For me the Mario series epitomises this pure but innovative approach to platforming (except Mario 2 and Sunshine which are both rather disappointing).

There are still no decent (or any?) 3D platformers on the 360. Can't we at least get one? Some of the Sonic games are the closest things but they're pretty crap, and there is Crash Bandicoot but again that looks pretty bad.

Any one else want to see a decent proper platformer on the 360, or is it just me?

Also, I think Platformers need to reassert themselves as a defined gaming genre, as 'platformer' seems to be the generic term used for any game that doesn't fall into the FPS, racing, sports categories.

Kameo is not a platformer.

Crackdown is not a platformer.

BK: N&B is not a platformer!

A platformer is a game where your primary objective is to navigate an increasingly difficult and complex series of 'platforms', where skillful, precise, and often quick jumping is key. Mario is the definition of platforming, as is the older Sonic games, as are things like Alex Kid and Donkey Kong Country and Banjo Kazooee.

The Wii is seriously lacking at the moment. It's expensive, and there haven't been any really good games released for it for ages. I think it's pretty lame, Nintendo seems to be on a mission to get as much money with as little effort as possible. They keep re-releasing GC games but with motion controls and charge full price for them! Disgusting. Also the whole motion sensing controls have proved to often become a negative element of many games, restricting the enjoyment of many games due to unnecessary, clunky control systems. I used to love nintendo, but I feel pretty disgusted with the way nintendo is conducting itself at the moment.

Galalxy an MP3 deffinately look a lot better than their GC counter parts.

The reason the wii graphics aren't as big a jumo ahead as the other 2 consoles are is because nintendo opted to advance the hardware less than Soniy and MS to keep the price down

BuryMe
How come the Wii is still more expensive than the X360, sure seeing as it was cheaper to make and has sold more units than the 360 then it should be at a lower price. I don't mind shallow, lack lustre games, but when they're trying to sell at prices the same as immense, deep, and exceptunal games such as Fallout 3, GOW etc, it takes the mick.

Man, is everyone on this forum retarded? I mean, can any of you actually read, or did you all just get in a tizz as soon as someone was questioning your precious beloved console?

First off- The dude said right at the start that he could see that Mario Galaxy was "noticably better" graphically than Sunshine. So stop going on about how obvious the difference is, you're only argiung with yourself.

Secondly- As far as I remember, he didn't mention anything about wanting 'more realistic' graphics, so why keep going on about that?

Thirdly, the guy has every right to question the Wii's graphical performance- everyone keeps saying it's atleast twice as powerful as the GC, so why aren't we seeing twice as good looking games all the time? (THERE ARE SOME DECENT LOOKING GAMES ON THE WII, but not as many as there should be.)

It's now 2009 and we still haven't seen any games that have really surpassed SMG, and very very few that come close, and alot that are worse than PS2 / GC standards.

Now to make matters worse, forgetting about graphics for a second, there aren't many games of high gameplay standards coming out either- say, 1 every 4 months, if that.

Now, when the Wii is still £179, and a X360 is £129; and Wii games tend to be more expensive than X360 games, I really think these questions need to keep being asked.

gamefan67
Please dont necro post.

Why not? It's an import question that is all the more relevant 3 years or what ever after launch.

Rapture was good in Bioshock, I would like to live there.

Spira in FFX was pretty

and the wasteland in Fallout 3

Slashfan10
You'd like to live in Rapture?! - Meet a nice Splicer, settle down, have some little sisters, bludgeon each other to death... you know, ordinary sort of life...

The Wasteland from Fallout 3. It's so eerily beautiful.

yokofox33
Yeah, had considered Fallout 3, but haven't played it yet. I'll get round to it at some point though. This brings up another point- do dystopias make the most engrossing environments- Wasteland, Rapture, City 17, etc...
