I reckon the Commodore / Spectrum / Amstrad era was the worst. Waiting half an hour for a tape game to load only for it to crash (repeat to infinity). Half the time the game was pretty crap, playing games trying to share a keyboard with your mate...ahh the nostalgia.

After browsing around forums and google I haven't found any articles or poll's on 'The Greatest / Most Memorable Gaming Worlds of All-Time'. I'm talking about those games where the world you navigate through is as much a character as anything else in the game, the kind of environment that you'll have dreams about being in after playing the game, world's with unforgettable atmosphere that swallows you whole. The gaming worlds that I consider to be up there as the best are, in no particular order.... - Rapture (Bioshock) - Midgar (FFVII) - Hyrule (Legend of Zelda) - Racoon City (Resident Evil / Biohazard) - City 17 (Half Life 2) Personally I think Rapture is the greatest as it is such a massive presence in the game, infact it's probably the main 'character' in Bioshock. I considered putting the GoW Earth in there but, although it is a marvelous environment, it doesn't really form a true character. I'm sure many of you will disagree... Also thought of the world of the first two Turok games, which were very atmospheric and forboding, but the fact it doesn't have a name or anything kind of takes away from it's presence. I'm sure there's loads more gaming worlds out there that I've forgotten, but I can't remember them off the top of my head (maybe that means they shouldn't be on the list...). Let me know what game worlds should be on there... I'm sure WOW should be on there but I've never played it...
