Customers will never have to worry that a PSV will be mandatory for a PS4. What the article is saying that Sony isn't requiring all games to support the PSV as a controller, saving developers unnecessary work.

Good. I don't want terrible touch screen gimmick on every PSV game, so I certainly don't want terrible touch screen gimmick on every PS4 game.

Hope Sony is finally realizing that forcing companies to make use of the touch screen (and other terrible gimmicks... stares at the Sixaxis) can lead to terrible experiences for both customers AND third party game companies. Sony seems to be more lenient these days when it comes to requiring the use of these gimmicks.

Simple, they're not the same digital.

First, when people talk about digital media, people are referring to purchases that don't come on physical media such as CD's, DVD's, and blu-rays. People are referring to purchases that are downloaded to the owner's own storage. What the OP is saying about blu-rays containing digital information isn't wrong. He's just side stepping this discussion into a completely different direction.

Second, not all media are the same for the reasons I stated above. A blu-ray is an improvement over a DVD because it can store more data. Otherwise, we wouldn't have needed to upgrade to blu-ray from DVD. A blu-ray is also better than digital downloads for the same reason, size. Due to internet traffic and storage size, companies usually don't distribute digital media the same quality as media on blu-ray discs. A typical 1080p digital video download will be in the 5 mbps range where a blu-ray video will be in the 20~30 mbps range. That's a huge difference in video quality.

So, the OP stated that he was talking about games. OK, we can talk about games on blu-ray. For games, blu-ray is still not outdated.

Why? It's because even with games, blu-rays have advantages that can't be negated by digital downloads. Because of this, a lot of people buy physical over digital. This is why the next generation of consoles accept blu-rays. If blu-rays were outdated for games, there wouldn't be enough people buying games on blu-ray, and the next generation of consoles wouldn't use them.

In fact, it's digital media that has yet to catch up to blu-ray. Customers don't have fast enough connection to stream blu-ray quality videos. Distributing blu-ray quality videos will eat up a lot of traffic. We still have lag in online games and now, companies want to stream whole games online. ISP's are pissing their pants trying to keep up, but the demand is moving faster than the current internet technology allows.

Oh no, blu-ray is not outdated. It'll be around for years and unless the world's internet gets significantly better, don't be surprised if we see another physical media upgrade from a blu-ray.

These "out dated" blu-rays deliver 1080p videos in much higher bit rate than any digital downloads I've seen. Oh, and majority of blu-rays have no real (for lack of a better word) DRM, allowing me to make digital versions of my blu-ray videos playable on any of my devices, with whatever video quality and size I want.

Blu-rays > digital

After all these years, I would still love to see a 2D Castlevania game on a Sony portable (currently the PSV) with gorgeous looking pre-rendered backgrounds, instead of the SNES style cartoon backgrounds we saw on the older previous games.

Did YOU read my post?

"...game companies trying to gouge even more of customers' money by trying to cash in on games that were already paid for."

It sounds like you based my whole post on the example in my second paragraph.

Does he think gamers are stupid? What really hurts gamers is Gamestop giving gamers chump change for trade-ins and charging ridiculous amount for used games, along with game companies trying to gouge even more of customers' money by trying to cash in on games that were already paid for.

If he's that worried about used games, he can make better games that people won't trade in. But if he wants a preview of what some customers do when we can't trade in games... I moved to digital only for a lot of games because I'm tired of this BS. And since I can't re-sell them, I don't buy nearly as many games as I used to. Plus, I rarely buy games at full price now; only buy them WELL below $20. If he wants me to buy one new game for $10 instead of 3 games for $60, well... I'm not going to argue there.

If he can't take it, maybe he should just work at Gamestop. Then again, his next BS would be about how game companies take all the money from new games and how he only makes like $5 per new game sold, and how he has to sell used games to pay the bills.

A little off-topic, but fake DLC is one of the reasons I no longer pay full prices for new games. I wait for extreme sales until the games are less than $20 (including the DLC, at times).

When I buy a game, I don't want a partial game where I'm forced to pay more money to unlock or download deliberately cut content for the purpose of milking more money from me. That's basically a scam and I'm not going to bend over like a bitch for companies to scam me. Plus, as a former employee of a game company, I know how some companies constantly test the waters to try to cut more corners while making more profit. I know that if I buy into this garbage, companies will take this further and further. Though unlikely, eventually, full price may only get us one character for one chapter of a game.

It's sickening some of the corners companies consider that the public is never aware of. It's a constant battle between passionate game makers arguing with non-gaming higher-ups why certain terrible things shouldn't be done.

It's also kind of funny (and mostly sad) when gamers flame other gamers that fake DLC is justified and how they're not entitled and what-not. The truth is, these "supporting" gamers are no different from the "entitled" gamers... They're just a step behind on what will tick them off. Supporting illegitimate DLC will push companies' greed further and eventually, something these "supporting" gamers care about will be the next target of company greed. The next thing you know, these same "supporting" gamers are echoing what the "entitled" gamers were saying before.

Pro? Yes. Athlete? Nah.

I used to compete in video games and physically, I wouldn't put gamers as athletes. Although some form of fitness is required in some games (such as Tekken where players spend months practicing wave dash, which is physically demanding), majority of games are more mind games and technical skills than fitness Though I guess you can say technique requires physical skills so it is kind of fitness related.

Are poker players considered athletes? Pro gamers liken game competition to poker and I'm wondering what poker players are considered.
