Have they? How so?
By wanting to sell their own games the way they wish, or by making an application no worse than Steam?
See, you're assuming he's directly speaking about presenting a competitive platform to Steam. EA has always been a fairly poor publisher, but they've had wonderful development teams beneath them that churned out pretty good games and stayed on top of things, but when EA actually develops a game...it's almost always a nightmare.
Origin was shown to steal private data that wasn't covered in the ToS. That's been known for some time now, they made the dunce move with Battlelog being outside of the client which really irked a lot of players, and since they decided to remove (or rather, block) some future releases from Steam or other DD services, people who like certain series of games are being forced to use something, which was a huge gripe that people had with Steam way back when. I think the major difference between them though is that Valve is a consistently top notch company while EA is not, so Steam was more easily accepted due to the fact that Valve wasn't a bad guy when it was released, EA kind of is.
My personal experience with EA customer support is subpar, not necessarily the worst (that cake goes to Nexon), but it was far from the best. My copy of BF2142 essentially sat in it's case because I could never get the registration deal to work again, and it was never resolved. This is one of the big reasons I use DD services over anything else now. Along with them basically shunning their customers by not listening to them, and by releasing Origin to a mass of negativity (Steam lovers and non-lovers alike), they've allowed some of their franchises to get watered down and stale.
EA isn't the big bad guy on the block, yet, but they're moving in that direction pretty dang fast.
