I don't think planescape torment is dated. The stuff where it is good at, has yet to be surpassed by any game. As far as combat is concerned , there were many better options at that time itself. In other words if you didn't liked it today, you probably would not liked the game when it was released (ignoring the bugs).

Worst level design was FEAR -- just endless seemingly same corridors. Best for me would be Myth 2 : Soulblighter -- I really liked the variety present throughout the levels

The reason is that apparently 'time has move on' (http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/112963-Starbreeze-Explains-Shootery-Syndicate)

- Company Of Heroes

- Total War Shogun2 (Not really a RTS, but a strategy game non the less and awesome to)

- Age Of Empire series

- Age of Mythology series

xboxmad12

+ DoW 1/2 Homeworld 1/2 Warcraft 3 CnC 3 (Not sure how far back you want to go )

Might have a go at WC3 as it's made by the same people as Starcraft so won't be too hard to pickup. Thanks!

yes, it is quite simple to pick up and pretty enjoyable too. DoW 2 is pretty simple to pickup too -- it's SP has no base building at all, mostly a group of fixed squads ( does get a bit repetitive though)

Note : Both games have some rpg elements live leveling up, getting new abilities, gears etc

My favorite is Planescape Torment. Another game with an amazing story but mostly overlooked would be the Gabriel Knight games.

Like people mentioned Tropico and Anno 1404 games are the best. Settlers 7 is also good. If after these you are still itching for more or want different settings , you can try slightly older games like Caesar3/ 4 (Roman Setting), Simcity 4 (metropolis), Children of Nile (ancient Egypt) etc

I put all the game shortcut icons in a folder and i have a link to that folder on the quick launch bar. Any game which I am playing a lot currently I generally add a direct link to that in quick launch too. I don't really use desktop icons , just the quick launch icons, so this is pretty convenient.

I generally try to avoid bad games or not play them for long, so I will not be listing really crappy games like Soldier of Fortune: Payback, Gothic 3: Forsaken Gods etc. Besides that : Gears of War : Besides some decent combat which got old pretty soon, didn't find anything good in it. Assassin's Creed : Repetitive nature of the game killed it for me Oblivion : Poor combat, poor game play, dull environments, isolated events and actions, no story or characters worth mentioning etc

Galactic Civilizations 2 (Along with all the addons i.e. ultimate edition) is a an excellent game and shares many similarities with Civ games. There are enough difference so that it doesn't feels the same and you have a bit more control in some aspects like designing units (ships). One of the best things about it as compared to Civ games is that the races are much more diverse and unique in design.
