Today, I read through the Readers' Choice awards and I really honestly think that it's just a battle of fanboy-ism. Not to be accusing of anyone here, but I was actually rather surprised at some of the choices for Readers' Choice and I think I can be pretty sure that it really has just degenerated into "I like this game and every other game - yes, the games that got awarded 9.0's or above - sucks and they can all go die so i'll vote for that game i like."
For instance, (i don't want any flak for this, i'm really just expressing an opinion) the best shooter award went to Call of Duty: Black Ops. Now, I know how many Call of Duty players are going to tell me that I suck and that I'm 40 and i still live with my mother (even though I'm actually still a teen), but really - think this through. What was it about Call of Duty: Black Ops that warranted it getting the Shooter of the Year award? The gameplay is still great for sure but we've seen the same thing for how many times? The storyline was great, but does that really make the shooter? The graphics were ok, but they don't make the shooter! The co-op zombie killing is fun as heck but is it truly great? I cannot deny that the competitive multiplayer is tons of fun, because it is, but does that really, truly, make it GREAT?
And games like Vanquish - they were truly amazing! Vanquish was so utterly original and fantastic that its difficult to see why it didn't win! Why didn't it? NO ONE PLAYED IT THAT'S WHY. So it all comes down to a sort of popularity contest or fanboy war.
When I went and looked through the list of accolades Call of Duty: Black Ops received, I noticed how it got nominated for "best Wii game". I was interested, so I clicked.
Super Mario Galaxy 2 won with a whopping 52%, but the second place winner for Readers Choice was... Call of Duty Black Ops, with 13% of the vote. Coincidence?
And in "Most Improved Sequel", I cannot deny that RDR was the best choice there, but what about Red Steel 2? Shouldn't that get some recognition? I mean, it was WAY better than the original, but it barely even got recognized because it sold rather poorly. Again, this makes it feel more like a popularity contest than anything else.
In many of the posts I read of Shooter of the Year, I saw things like "At least Halo didn't win" or "READERS WRONG AGAIN". This feels like the people who posted them had no reason whatsoever to post it, but simply hated the game so much they felt like posting something like that. Next time, please give reasons for why you don't like games!
I really don't know what to say... Readers Choice seems to be more and morel like a popularity contest or a fanboy war.
What do you guys think?
