And I don't mean this particular GOTY, more like a general trend among recent years? They tend to be different than other sites.

@JohnyMyko @Kevin-V @anne_1230 I don't mean GS pick bad games. More in the sense that given some possible choices, all of them being defendable/deserving/possible in some way, GS tend to go with the less popular/less obvious pick that make them stand out among all game sites' choices. I don't necessarily think it's a bad thing either.

That being said, I do feel like GS has a tendency to make controversial picks to generate debate and attention (sometimes a little deliberately)

Yeah this is definitely a very chris list *cough*fps*cough* but it's nice to see how different staff have different genre/type of games they like. I think when it comes to personal lists the correct title really shouldn't be personal "top" 5, but a personal "favorite" 5 games of the year. I know there are games that I put in my personal favorite list but I would not call them the "best" (which is also why I think these personal list may very well not contain their final GOTY, although that is somewhat unusal I feel it not completely impossible)

@trugs26 I think the people so far are not the Nintendo people at GS and not necessarily wii u owners. Maybe Peter Brown will have a nintendo game? Also if Tom were still at GS I think his list would definitely have Nintendo..alas. Also their last year's GOTY was a nintendo game (3ds).

The link to Gamespot Gameplay is missing from the videos-shows dropdown menu so I could only find this by clicking "all shows". Is it missing on purpose? I sure wish it can be easier to find!

I do miss the quiz stuff but enjoyable episode nonetheless. Although I missed where you talked about thief or DSII. The latter can probably be explained by Tom's absence.

Haven't played lightning returns and I'm not sure if I will pick it up. I love JRPG (and I love anime) so I can probably handle some whackness in my story-lines but 13's protagonists have not been interesting to me and it doesn't sound like that's changed here.

Great episode as usual! Good luck to Francis and sorry to see you leaving.

I like the idea of having guests and enjoyed all the guest appearances in the past! On the other hand, I also like this podcast partly (mostly?) thanks to those who regularly appear on it. The current group's personalities seem to play off well with each other and result in fun interactions! Plus it's always entertaining to have people with strong opinions, even if I don't agree with said people sometimes :P

I guess what I want to say is that, I do believe getting a guest (quite like in the past) will make for interesting episodes so I look forward to it! But I also look forward to episodes with familiar faces and would never get bored of that. Either way, thanks for a great podcast!

Chris you need to make more of those race videos (@1 hour 40 min ) ! Best part of the stream right there haha. I can see how the "record that" function being very handy for those exact purpose. Probably the most useful out of the voice commands (at least feels like so to me).

@naomivdhaar I think they once explained it (because they often ends up having contests where they can only give the prize to US people) it's something related to copyright policies or things like that. So it's not really a cost or difficulty of shipping thing.

Shawnb65: okay...wall of text coming your way...

I do think something is blown out of proportion, but I don't think it's the size of the problem, rather it's the size of the problem as compared to the same problem in the world in general. Some may say that the gaming industry is much worse at the sexism thing than other industries. I personally think it's not that much worse. Where we probably disagree is how large the problem is in the general society.

I think that while we have come a long way - for example, women are now allowed to vote like men! - we have not come far enough yet; the reality is we still have quite some equality problems in our society/culture in general. I don't really want to get into an argument on this topic...so if you want to just label me a feminist or whatever and stop reading here I won't mind.

If you do believe that there is still a societal problem on equality, then here's what I believe is special about the gaming industry and thus why it's a good place to start conversations:

First is that you see the problem show up most obviously here, and when someone points them out, you can hide behind the argument "that's what the market demand is so get over it!" (which is kinda what you are doing). For example, people don't say "women are just sex objects!" because, again, we have come a long way and saying something like that will get you labelled sexist, but you see magazine covers/movies/games that depict women as sex objects (like for example this whole MGS thing), and if someone tries to point out that's perhaps problematic, then in comes the argument "hey that's just the market demand so nothing's wrong with that!" Hopefully you see that just because something is in line with the market demand doesn't make it not problematic; just because something is in line with societal views doesn't make it right. Because societal values can be wrong; that's the whole point of activism.

Second thing is that, the gaming industry along with entertainment industry in general is perhaps the best place to start to solve the problem of the general society. It's a cycle, really: societal views affect the types of entertainment products that get made, but the entertainment products in turn affect people's views and beliefs. You may argue that compared to some other industries, games perhaps reaches less of an audience so it's less important. I actually agree; and I think that's precisely why the problem seems more severe in the games industry - because less people are consuming it so when the problem rears its head, there's less people noticing it so the industry as a whole gets away with the problem more often. So yes, to solve the problem, just talking about it within the games industry is nowhere enough. But it's a good place to start, and more importantly, for a gaming website like gamespot, it's the part that's within their scope.

So you are right, in a way I do want to change the way people think. Where we disagree is that you seem to think "changing the way people think" is not the right thing to do. I on the other hand believe that we should never stop challenging the way people think...that's how we can make progress and move forward.
