I think I made a topic about this before a few years back, but decided to post about the subject again, since a few members have had recent problems with their Sega CD.

Sega CD's are a lovely thing to have to your collection, but often are plagued with a simple problem that make a owner think it's game over for their system. You'll power it on one day with no problem, turn it on the next with no life in the system.

It's the fuse. The F301 fuse located on the Sega CD/Mega CD Model 1, and Sega CD/Mega CD Model 2 are prone to being blown. They weren't really wonderful to begin with, and are known to pop like crazy. The solution? Replace it with a better fuse.

First of all, make sure it's the fuse. make sure the connection between the Sega CD/Mega CD and the Genesis/Mega Drive is clean, and flush. Try it a few times to make sure. If it doesn't work then, it's probably the fuse.

What you'll need:

- a small screwdriver to unscrew the screws of the Mega CD 2
- a soldering iron
- a pair of long nose pliers
- wiresolder
- 1 fuse holder (optional but recommended for future replacements)
- 1 fuse (1.5 amp fuse for Sega CD/Mega CDModel 1, 2.5 amp fuse for Sega CD/Mega CD Model 2)

The best picture I've seen on the net is here:

I haven't seen a good guide with pictures for the Model 1, but again, it's the same fuse, the F301 fuse, and it's labeled on the board. Once found, the process to replace it is the same.

All pictures are from retrocorner.net.

For some strange reason gamespot wouldn't allow the link to the guide to go through.

Once fixed, and closed on make sure to have the appropriate adapter for your Sega CD. I actually labeled my Genesis, Sega CD, and 32x adapters with a sticker on top of the adapter, to just make sure in the future I'm using the correct one for each system. Using the wrong adapter will most likely blow the fuse. Also, always plug it into a surge protector, not directly into the wall or outlet to limit issues. In fact I always recommend to plug any system into a surge protector to limit issues.

We might have found one already, but give me the link just in case. Or where to buy a fuse. Legolas_Katarn

I believe you said you have a model 2 Sega CD. Here's the best picture example I could find. It's the F301 fuse. (look at how tiny it is!)

Just make sure that the connection between the sega CD and genesis is cleaned first to make sure it's not a connection problem.

I basically snipped out the the old fuse, and soldered the new 2.5 amp fuse in.

Sega CD/Mega CD 1 uses a 1.5 amp fuse replacement.

Sega CD/Mega CD 2 uses a 2.5 amp replacement.

Good idea is to try to to get a small fuse holder so it's easier to replace the fuse without more soldering in the future.

After you solder it in and close the Sega CD/Mega CD 2 up, make sure you have the correct plug for it (I actually mark my plugs with a label to make sure I don't confuse it with another plug, and always plug it into a surge protector to limit problems in the future.

The Masked Rider: Kamen Rider ZO complete for $7.....Are you serious?  WOW!  I would jump at getting the game at that price.  In fact, I have that game currently on my eBay watch list......too bad that the price is a good bit higher though.

All of those games for $50!  You got quite a deal.  Congrats. 8)

EDIT: I was so hyped about Kamen Rider ZO that I forgot to put down my latest eBay wins. LOL

 Galaga '90 (TG16)* - $15.50

 Gunboat (TG16)* - $11.48

Parasol Stars: The Story of Bubble Bobble III (TG16)* -  $34.36

Flying Nightmares (3DO)* - $10.00 + ship (box is in bad shape but disc looks great)

The first three were shipped together in one box.

* complete

Thanks :D When I got home, I just had to play the Kamen Rider game first. The game is actually based off of a movie from Japan and features some of the most wicked character designs ever.

Very nice prices on the TG games! Galaga 90 is a great game (I own it on the wii's virtual console).

The Sega CD I bought with the Genesis Model 1 and Saturn won't work. Probably a fuse blown, we might be able to fix it but for now I just bought another one in an auction for around $80 it came with

Sega CD (Model 2, tested to work)
Sega Genesis Model 2 (so I have 2 model 2s now and one model 1)
Two Controllers (I think I have 7 now)
1 Turbo Controller
Game Cleaning Kit
11 Genesis Games all cart only

Mortal Kombat
TMNT: Hyperstone Heist
NFL Football 94
World of Illusions Starring Mickey Mouse and Donald Duck
Caslte of Illusions
Taz-Mania
Jewel Master
Road Rash 2
NHLPA Hockey 93
Mike Ditka Power Football
Sonic (the only one with a case, not sure about directions)

Shining Force 3 P1: $88 (Complete)

L.A. Noire: $60

The Witcher 2 SE: $130

Legolas_Katarn
Good stuff :D Especially Shining Force 3. Like I said before, it sounds like a cla$$ic case of the Sega CD blowing a fuse.  if you need help replacing it, I can show you a good guide on how to replace it. :)

[QUOTE="Legolas_Katarn"][QUOTE="waflerevolution"]very nice.waflerevolution

The new games and Shining Force, yes. For the Sega stuff, I'd rather the first one just worked. Unless my friend can fix it, then I can sell it, probably at a profit. Make sure it works, change the battery, include some of the seven or eight controllers I have, and the extra Model 2 Genesis.

my Sega CD had a power issue as well, it's been bricked for years... I have manyGenny controllers as well, but I also have a multi-tap for gams like General Chaos and Mutant League Hockey :)

My Sega CD I got some years back bricked shortly after I got it. I fixed it though, it's was the fuse. Most Model 2 Sega Cd's have poor fuses (the fuses installed in Sega CDs are so small and poor it's not even funny), and need replacing, which is easily done. People mistakenly got rid of them when reality the system was fine, it was just the crappy fuses Sega put in them. All you need is the proper fuse (home depot) a small soldering gun and solder, and a little time to do it. :)

What a great haul of games! Grats on some awesome DC/SCD finds. 'The Masked Rider: Kamen Rider ZO, Sega CD, Complete, $7' and 'Illbleed, Dreamcast, Complete, $14 ' are wicked to get in the wild!

/high five ;)

TwarBlackshire
Thanks man! My jaw almost hit the floor when I saw kamen rider. I'm a fan of the Japanese series so it's awesome to see this turn up. The place had a pretty big selection of dreamcast titles in great shape so seeing Illbleed pop up was awesome too.

I got some more games at a local charity shop...

TwarBlackshire

Sweet gameboy stuff dude! :D

Finally was able to stop by the local media exchange to check out their retro game selection. Was able to find some nice Dreamcast games complete, on the cheap among other things.

The Haul:

1. Star Wars: Arcade, 32x, Cart only, $1, R1

2. Metal Head, 32x, Cart only, $2, R3

3. Alisia Dragoon, Sega Genesis, Cart only, $2 (found it on a whim, picked it up cause I never heard of it before and it's by Sega apparently. Watching gameplay vids it look like a shoot em up mixed with a platformer, and very promising!), R4

4. GunForce, Snes, cart only, $8, R2

5. The Masked Rider: Kamen Rider ZO, Sega CD, Complete, $7 (oh man, I'm so excited I got this game! Don't find this in the wild too often), R3

6. Fighting Force 2, Dreamcast, Complete, $2, R1

7. Expendable, Dreamcast, Complete, $6, R2

8. Sega Rally 2: Sega Rally Championship, Dreamcast, Complete, $2, R2

9. Daytona Usa, Dreamcast, Complete, Free, R2

10. Hydro Thunder, Dreamcast, Complete, Free, R2

11. Super Magnetic Neo, Dreamcast, Complete, Free, R3

12. Blue Stinger, Dreamcast, Complete, $6, R1

13. Trick$tyle Dreamcast, Complete, $6, R1

14. Illbleed, Dreamcast, Complete, $14 (this looks awesome), R3

I scored the three free games through a promotion the shop had (buy 3 games, get 1 free). Not bad for a little over 50 bucks. :D
