The took out backward compatibility in order to lower the price,you may not understand it but the PS3 fat model actually had a PS2 GS and emotion engine inside it,basically it had 4 chips,so they cut those and sold you the unit $100 less any way it wasn't like they were not selling PS2 any more,the damn thing was still selling on 2012.
They removed linux because of piracy not to lower the price.

Kinectless Sku went from 399 to 350. With Kinect went from 499 to 450. That is a price drop by definition.
