Sure, you can save a *little* money and get a console, play games that are worse looking, with less options. That is a viable solution.
But as a hobbyist gamer I would argue that a PC is the only way to fly if you truly want to experience what gaming has to offer.
The immersion, controls, graphics, intelligence quotient is all off the charts in Witcher 2; and in most PC games including multiplats (ME2 for example has separate keys for each 'power' as opposed to the hack job of using a controller with limited buttons.
edit: remember steam downsamples screenshots - this looks dramatically better on my monitor.
