I tallied up the parts you listed earlier and it came to £1000 = 1600ish USD
And that's not including the case and PSU that i'd require.
No thanks. Witcher 2 looks good though - can't wait till it releases :D
Shop for a PC like you would a game sale, a component is almost always on sale somewhere.
The SSD is a Crucial M4 64 GB (cache, not straight drive). $85 on Amazon.
Almost everyone knows a student, paying full price for Win 7 is foolish.
The other option is to do MSDN and get ALL MS software for $150.00. (10 keys of Win7)
My friends do this for new builds. Deck out with MSDN software and split the $150 / 3
ehussein1379
Of course you shop in sales, especially for higher-priced components. Regardless, your build is skewed and does not take everything into account. You can build a killer rig (with all components) for sub-$1000, so why not do that?
"Almost everyone knows a student, paying full price for Win 7 is foolish", not at all, and if they do, they may not know them well enough to ask this favour. OEM Win7 is the middle-ground, as it isn't the severely overpriced version, nor the hard to obtain cheap-as-chips version.
What limits are there with MSDN subscriptions? Is it viable for your average gamer?
[QUOTE="lostrib"]
You're right, this is an exception rather than a norm. Of course he doesnt need such high end components for games to run well. Side note: if you can get a student copy of Win 7 it is an upgrade disk, but it can be used to do a full install
lundy86_4
I'd rather go with the norm in this case. I'm all for arguing PC gaming, as I love it... Let's just be reasonable :P
As for it being a full install, I wasn't aware. I may have to look at my licence for when I upgrade as I use the Win7 for students as well.
Paying full price for PC components / software is like buying games for full price. You just don't do it.
$1k is a good amount though, that will get a PC to roundly obliterate the consoles for years to come.
(and with multiplats that means dominating games without needing to upgrade for years to come).
Once all 360 games are on PC via Win 8 who would buy a 360? It just doesn't make sense.
A PS3 however will ALWAYS be amazing for Netflix and the occasional game.

His build requires a lot of frugality
Not frugality. Frugality would be a 2500k build.
This requires patience. (and it doesn't hurt that my previous gaming PC is still up to snuff)

Is the hardware really that expensive in UK? I tallied it too and came up with $1140 figure. :?Yeah just do a google search, I just had to change a registration value no problems. I think in the end PC people dont care about the price because a lot of PC people enjoy the actual act of building and tweaking, it is more of a hobby
lostrib
Agreed. Whilst I love the games, I also love the building and overclocking aspect.

It just costs money. But if you are a student see if your school has a deal with MSDN to see if you can get free Win 7. Some schools have it, and some only have it through computer science departments
Why isn't this thread in the PC chatboard?KC_Hokie
Because TC is saying how His PC is vastly superior to the Consoles.
The OP just wanted to talk about PC hardware and added "...PCs are superior" to make it SW worthy. Yeah, I dunno if my school does. Regardless, I got my copy of Win7 for $30 through the student deal in Canada, so I can't complain :P
I can't believe they even do Office as well. MS has some pretty sweet deals in place.

If people dont pay full price for games the industry wont survive.
MSDN is an amazing way to get ALL MS software for cheap.
Get 3 friends and its $50 each for Win 7, Office 2010 and Visual Studio 2010.
No brainer.
Also: SSD caching is incredible. DO NOT GO STRAIGHT SSD.
Consoles load games literally 100x slower than this PC. (I tested BC2 on PS3 as a comparison)

Cool, I guess. The same remark could be used for most threads, if you omit the "PC", in System Wars. Again, just report and move on if it's such an issue. The topic itself seems to have generated much discussion from all aspects of System Wars TBH.
Let me break this down for you:
This is the core of System Wars.
My $860 PC runs games better, faster, with higher quality and more selection than a $300 console.
Beyond that the PC is valuable for much more than just gaming.
The PC in this post has won SW.
You didn't say any of that in your OP.Let me break this down for you:

It's only part of a PC. Just with that, you couldn't run anything. I'll let the case and KB/M go for this post, but you don't even include a PSU! I mean... It's essential :P

Well generally for games that are bought on sale they are bought via digital distribution so the companies actually make a lot of money from that

Fair enough. $50 case + $30 keyboard + $30 mouse + $100 PS = $210 + $860 = $1070 (realistically subtract $85 for SSD for the 'budget' version)
So, for $1070 you get a beastly machine, access to a better gaming experience and a multifunction dominator of a PC to boot.
The 6970 has a mini-HDMI so its one cable for sound + video to my 55" LCD. With my wireless 360 controller this thing is a console + PC + server + dominator box in a nutshell.

True, and we could argue that to be better than consoles the TC did not have to spend that much. Using the SSD as cache, does that decrease life with more read/writes?

It is a killer rig, and I was looking at the 6970 for an upgrade. Unfortunately I won't be upgrading until later this year, so I may hold off to see what else nVidia/AMD may be offering soon.

No more than using a straight SSD would.
I'll get ~5 years out of the SSD, and I'll upgrade in ~3 years no nbd.
Intel makes the 311 (SLC) for cacheing, but its only 20GB and I bounce between games - so went with the 64 GB crucial (MLC).
MLC will have a shorter life.
If consoles would only use an SSD cache - 2nd pass reads would be amazing, and games like ME1/DAO wouldn't take years of loading.

Good call. I'll probably upgrade post BF3 and put the 6970 in my old box and get a new case for it.
I don't feel guilty about it since the video card was an open box and pretty cheap.
Bulldozer + new AMD + 16 GB = heaven
BF3 will be insane, especially at 60fps w/ 32 v 32 :P

I wanna see how Bulldozer does, especially in regards to game performance. So long as it's not over $350 (octocore), then I may look into it, should the performance fit the bill (those posted here were determined fake :().

Indeed.
PC gaming is objectively better than console gaming.

For some games a controller is better. Like GTA4 which has massive aim assists and doesn't require precision the benefit of driving with a controller outweighs the precision of shooting with a mouse.

For my example of ME2 you can't map a power to a button, you have to select through them (or pause) using a controller.
On PC you can map each power to a button, and 'insta-fire' them, dramatically speading up combat and the flow of 'epicness' coming from Shephard.
Nah, consoles have better controls and community, and MUCH better games. Plus the ease of use is vastly superior to that of a PC.
Cheesehead9099
The ease of use is starting to become less as consoles keep adding services and requirements like install to hard drive.
And the idea of much better games is subjective unless you compare multiplats where PC generally is better. And in which genres does console have better controls?

Nope. You can plop down on the couch and play with your console. A console is a true Plug-n-Play device. PCs aren't. They require much more fine tuning and setup than a console where you simply plug the power and hdmi cable in and you can play. Did you read my spoiler tag? I said that all of this is subjective. The only unarguable objective fact is graphics. And consoles have better controls in racing, fighting, flight control (imo), and TPS (imo) games.[QUOTE="Cheesehead9099"]
