Giant Bomb hired 2 new white guys and now some feminists I never heard off are up in arms saying that game journalism is all white males and that there's no opportunity for women or minorities.

I get it. Like I get why someone would be disappointed that Giantbomb who has Patrick talking about equality and diversity, and then they fill open spots, with 30 year old white dudes. I get that. I get why someone would be disappointed by that. The problem is though they were aiming for an experienced individual which in this medium is unfortunately a bunch of white dudes. Like a 5-8 man full time website (the giantbomb staff is actually really small) getting this much flack when Eurogamer, IGN, or Polygon don't get this is ridiculous.

But the residents of Mt. Pious do their usual thing where they handle this type of stuff with no grace. But to be fair all the people on the sister mountain for Mt. Pious were just as terrible. I can understand wanting to defend the GB guys, but if you need to post hateful shit, be it racist, sexist, homophobic or what have you, what did you actually accomplish? Justify people like Anita Snarkwhateverhername is and the residents of Mt. Pious? come on.

I'm a little surprised by Leigh Alexander's tweet. Patrick has pimped out her shit a bunch of times, she's been on bomin with the AM, and she tweets that? A little tasteless on her part as well.

I have to agree with Chris Chicken--the last thing we need is another Kotaku. They're influence is already spreading to places like Gamespot and Polygon, and it's not amusing. It'd be one thing if they presented rational arguments, analyzing the situations and offering sound advice; instead, we're treated to reactionary garbage bitching about there being a female hostage (the horror!) or reactionary opinions based on false assumptions (the FC4 gay villain fiasco). It seems Ubisoft in particular has been getting a lot of shit from ignorant SJWs lately--game journalists pissed at Ubi for some reason? I am pissed at them as well, but my complaints stem from Splinter Cell being diluted into a TPS and the wholesale abandonment of Prince of Persia in favor of that horseshit AssCreed franchise.

And I do have to agree to some extent--cutting off your penis and taking some estrogen pills doesn't make you a man. Still shouldn't harass people over their mental issues though.

Yeah, I should say that she doesn't deserve the harassment she got for declaring her position (no matter how dumb it is). Nobody deserves that.

The harassing is really unwarranted. But, her negligence that maybe she isn't cut out for the job isn't greatly appreciated as well.

Maybe when more qualified and experienced female journalists apply for such jobs, then more females will be hired? It's not like GB actively chose a candidate just because they were male... sigh.

So since no one hopefully would question the integrity of the HR department and that they of course hired the most qualified person , i do not get this Sams critic because advocating hiring less qualified females just because they are female is grounds for legal action for unlawfull discrimination.

If a majority of gamers were pink elephants with monkeys on their backs, it still wouldn´t change the fact that who ever got hired is the most qualified candidate. If someone disagrees, then hopefully someone who actually did apply will have a chat with a lawyer and look into filing a unlawful discrimination suit against CBS and Giantbomb.

People are defending her against the criticism / attacks ... yet she brought it on herself here. Its borderline troll level to automatically assume that she wasn't hired because she wasn't a white male, such an assumption without any evidence is sexist it itself, and pretty dellusional....

To make matters worse, she posted in twitter, not only obviously going to rile up "white males" because they feel as if they are being prosecuted (which is always the case with these less rational feminists) but she also just slated a potential future employer.... and many other employers will probably look at this and think "do I even want to risk speaking to this person"? talk about professional suicide.

Feminists tend to be the worst sexists. They become hate groups and do not stand for gender equality but find sexism in all places that are not important, and divert people from the places where sexism is a very real problem. When I hear someone is a feminist it repels me. Even though there must be actual people out there who want the world to be fair to both sexes it's almost a given that the feminist won't be that person at all. It would be wise of honest 'feminists' to use a label that is more appropriate. Like equalists or gender neutralists or whatever.

This seems to be just another 'feminist' who is bitching about anything that doesn't matter. I hope she won't get much media attention but I guess this is how she set this up.

The larger systemic issue of a male dominated video game industry is fine, but throwing a temper tantrum over hiring clearly qualified applicants because they're white guys is ludicrous.

Naturally, for the most part, internets gonna internet in response rather than telling them why it's logically unsound--although let's be honest, "Go **** yourself" doesn't necessarily indicate a whole lot of intellectual honesty going on there.

To play devil's advocate.. There are tangible benefits to diversity hiring practices. In areas such as industrial chemistry or hardware manufacturing, not so much, but in media there are tangible benefits. You can reach out to a larger demographic for one thing. You also tend to get more wide and varied viewpoints in debates which leads to out-of-the-box results and fresher content.

Believe it or not, diversity leads to a better end product in most cases. The results speak for themselves. If GiantBomb did find more worthwhile minorities in their ranks, they would be insulated from these kinds of crapstorms as well. It's food for thought. An idea worth entertaining that does have tried and tested benefits.

That being said.. The Samantha Allens of the world harm the case more than they do good.

My understanding is that she did not apply for the position. She just merely weighed in on the subject. Internet shitstorm ensued.

They have a logical argument that seems to stem from the idea of negative responsibility--Giant Bomb isn't actively being racist or sexist by hiring white males, but the belief is that by doing so they are nonetheless perpetuating the inequality in the industry. The theory tries to separate intent from ethical responsibility, and suggest that even if they aren't trying to be awful white demons, they're still just as accountable.

The issue with this is that most people who invoke negative responsibility when it comes to gender or ethnic issues can be proven to be hypocrites. As soon as we strip away intent from ethical responsibility most of us become murderers; it labels me morally responsible for people who starve to death when I don't donate to charity. But when I post about a video game on Twitter, I don't receive a barrage of tweets telling me that I'm an asshole for unwittingly contributing to famine in another country. Why'd I buy that game instead of donate the money? No one seems to care about that.
