That's exactly what I thought watching the BMW in the first race. For tight, closed circuit racing it's not good enough. I'm not thinking happy thoughts about this game :-(
The Shift series is a great representation of racing. Twitchy, powerful cars that require patience and practice to get right. No rewind feature. Fantastic damage modelling that shredded your car if you hit an obstacle at high speed. Heaps of customisation options and a lengthy single player experience if you wanted to get podium places.
Is demolition derby coming back? That was one of my favourites, making a big jump only to be slammed from the side in midair. It was at its best in cockpit view.
So all the "experts" are out in force today it seems. Maybe a new Metacritic section for video preview scores should be initiated, given that pre-release footage is such a reliable indicator of the final product.
I was pretty impressed with some of the visual details. Looks great. The character animations are nice too. Someone else here said "combat heavy" - not a bad thing but I do like my combat to be relatively meaningful so I hope the story has some kick to it. Seems like there are a ton of 3rd person games coming out next year.
Also...why on earth show gameplay on casual difficulty FPS?! It's a sniper game, don't we all want to see the player challenged by physics, wind etc.? I thought that was the whole point of a game like this.
It would be a real shame for a game as visually gratifying as this (probably much more so on PC) to fail gameplay wise. The reloading animation at the start looked fantastic, but there doesn't look like much to do other than pop and shoot. In contrast, Far Cry 3 has a near complete suite of combat options that might not be "realistic" but are heaps of fun in a gameplay sense.
