  1. Panzer Dragoon Saga
  2. Final Fantasy VI
  3. Baldur's Gate II: Shadows of Amn
  4. Pyre
  5. Fallout: New Vegas

OK, so Pyre is probably much less of an RPG than the others on this list, and maybe fits more into the adventure genre. Next would be Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Explorers of Sky if it doesn't count. (I guess even there RPG is debatable, so after that is Dragon Age: Origins I think.)

It is super cool to see you mention Darklands, OP. That's one of my favourites. And it's of course awesome to see another mention of Panzer Dragoon Saga here.

1) Panzer Dragoon Saga
A masterpiece. It's just such an inspired experience, one that is almost perfectly well rounded with an engaging story, interesting characters, fantastic art direction, an innovative and fun combat system, and otherworldly music that complements everything else so well. I have almost no complaints whatsoever with the game. I wish more people could play it.

2) Final Fantasy VI
It's another game where practically all its aspects work together to create such a brilliant work overall. I love the characters, and just how many of them there are. The story is great, especially in how it allows the character dynamics to flourish and in the themes it brings to the forefront. It also takes some big risks with the structure, and I think they pay off. The game has so many classic moments that I doubt I'll forget.

3) Journey
It's a timeless experience that conveys so much through its simplistic presentation. I also consider it one of the most beautiful works, audiovisually, I know of. And while it's not the most "video gamey" out there, I do think it makes use of the medium in a great way, as the act of playing the game and experiencing the story feel more closely connected than in almost every other I've played.

4) The House in Fata Morgana
In my opinion, the best story I've had the pleasure of reading in a video game, with some of the best characters. The way it presents its heavy, serious themes with such tact and emotional resonance is impressive and probably the biggest part of why it sticks with me. It has some excellent artwork and music which, again, complement everything else so nicely.

5) Baldur's Gate II: Shadows of Amn
The pinnacle of the CRPG genre, and a thoroughly engrossing game. I love how introspective it is story-wise, I love how engaging the quests are, and I love how much there is to the gameplay. The characters are great and feel practically like family to me, and I just played the game pretty recently. The art direction brings the world to life so well, from a visual perspective, which adds to how well realized it is in all other ways.

Several 3DS over the years, and quite a few Switches as well.

  1. Pyre
  2. Rain World
  3. The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild
  4. WipEout Omega Collection
  5. Hellblade: Senua's Sacrifice
  6. What Remains of Edith Finch
  7. Fire Emblem Echoes: Shadows of Valentia
  8. Thumper
  9. Splatoon 2
  10. Into the Breach

I'm not sure if I should count FFXIV as current gen, but that would be in the top 5 most likely.

I could be forgetting something. FFXIV would probably be here, but I did not play it during that gen.

A "pure upgrade" over PS4 doesn't necessarily offer enough to make buying it worth it. So someone with very little interest in whatever new PS5 has might make the decision to not bother with the new system.

Panzer Dragoon Saga
Darklands
Morrowind
Sonic R
Phantasy Star
Final Fantasy II

Some of these would be incredibly difficult to pull off properly, and/or aren't games that would see much attention of any kind from their publishers, let alone full remakes, in today's gaming landscape. I think the first three on my list are already incredible games, while the last three I don't enjoy that much.

  1. Panzer Dragoon Saga
  2. The Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind

  4. Ico
  5. The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild
  6. Pyre
  7. Riven
  8. Subnautica

If I were listing more I would have Shenmue II as my 11th favourite, but I guess it's practically tied for 10th.
