I put in effort and watched the ones I hadn't watched recently. Which were a fair few. But, here's my top picks in order...

1. Princess Kaguya (Watched this recently. Absolutely fantastic.)

2. Kiki's Delivery Service (Great childhood classic. Can't beat nostalgia.)

3. Spirited Away (Another childhood classic.)

4. Howl's Moving Castle (Childhood classic.)

5. My Neighbour Totoro (First ghibli film I saw along with Spirited Away.)

6. Porco Rosso (Watched recently, it's really really great.)

7. Princess Mononoke (Childhood classic again.)

8. Ponyo (A lot of people don't like this one, I loved it though.)

9. Grave of the Fireflies (Classic.)

10. (Laputa Castle in the Sky (Not my favourite, but worthy of being on the list.)

Of the ones I really like; Spirited Away = Princess Monokone > Nausica > Porco Rosso

Howl's Castle was just ok. It's been a while since I saw Laputa but I remember being creeped out by the sky pirates being infatuated with the young girl in it. Maybe I'm not recalling it correctly. I had a similar problem with that Lupin movie, though otherwise both were pretty good. Totoro was incredibly overrated and I thought it was bizzare that the father would move the girls away from their sick mother.

In this very older:

  1. Princess Mononoke (I would've put this over Little Nemo, but Mononoke is just so good, the quality if the movie itself makes this a cult classic)
  2. Little Nemo: Adventures in Slumberland (I am mostly surprise no one didn't mention this here. It is by far my favorite movie growing up with this classic cult and it's right up with Princess Mononoke)
  3. Whisper of the Heart (everything about that movie just feels really genuine. The romance and career stuff is cute)
  4. Spirited Away (is the most popular in the west and it's also my favorite but I often think it's overrated)
  5. Ni No Kuni/2 (I know this is a game but I thought it couldn't hurt to included it here right? I enjoy the games so hey, I thought it was a good idea to included it here)
  6. The Cat Returns (least favorite Ghibli of them all)
  7. Castle in the Sky (I happened to be a fan of anything Steampunk stuff and this movie fits right in my alley)

The Tale of the Princess Kaguya is an absolutely beautiful film, and a beautiful tragedy when you really look at it.

Howl's Moving Castle

Princess Mononoke

You are really pushing it with these two selections.

Little Nemo, while it was initially going to be a Hayao Miyazaki creation, it was abandoned by Studio Ghibli and done by a completely different team and distributor. That's why you don't see it on anyone's list. It's not anywhere near the filmography profile of Studio Ghibli creations.

Ni No Kuni simply does not count because Ghibli did not even make those games. Those games were merely inspired by the art of Ghibli. Even if Ni No Kuni was created by Ghibli it still does not count because this thread specifically is asking about MOVIES, not games.

That's like making a thread asking about your favorite Pixar films and you include Shrek, Kung Fu Panda and Epic Mickey for some odd reason. Does not work that way.

That part was unknown to me. I always wonder why but this explains it more so, so thanks for the info. I have no idea it got abandon by Ghibli Studio. Like I said, it was something I enjoy growing up but the lack of information as to why it never get's mention pretty much explains why.

Come Jaydan, I couldn't resist mentioning Ni No Kuni but you do have a solid point.

I've only seen Spirited Away and My neighbor Totoro so my list would be:

1. Spirited Away

... and that's it.

Started Kiki's but couldn't get into. Judging by this thread I should take a look at Princess Mononoke.

The only other poster here who has the same top two as me.

Grave of the Fireflies is one of the best war dramas ever made. It's also one of the darkest animated movies ever made, in contrast to Ghibli's typically light-hearted output.

And Laputa: Castle in the Sky is pretty much the basis for almost every steampunk JRPG. For example, you can definitely see its influence in Final Fantasy (along with Nausicaa).

@byof_america: I'd also recommend Princess Kaguya.
