Wow you played a lot of bad games growing up, my condolences. I had a NES and SNES growing up and then got a PS1 due to the lack of supply for N64s that year. I played Mario 64 at a friends birthday party that he rented and man, that was impressive back then. Still happy I got a Sony though, as there were tons of great games on PS1.
They're making too much money from shark cards and GTA5 is still in the 10 games sold each money on Xbone/PS4. With Red Dead Redemption 2 coming out this year, it's not improbable, but lame that they're retreading old ground, just like Red Dead is.
With Toys 'R' Us going bankrupt and not finding any suitors for a restructuring, I think it's only a matter of time before Gamestop kicks the bucket. That said, Gamestop has a lot better relationships with their customers and lower costs of doing business.
I think Steam and console online stores will gradually eat their lunch with their massive sales and free games via PlayStation Plus and Miscrosoft's Live service. I don't think they'll sell enough gaming paraphernalia to make up for it. I do hope I am wrong though.
I think what you mean is the simulation genre, which has been on life support for some time. The Roller Coaster Tycoon series is an example of this type of game.
