@aross2004: Since the police are numerous and aggressive, early in the game, I assumed you just have to return home at heat level 2. Now I have a faster car and have access to those upgrades that disrupt police radars etc, I can now escape level 3. I'm not gonna intentionally push them to level 4 or 5 until I have further upgrades.

I haven't had any problems with the "Busted bar". It only seems to fill up when I'm driving at low speeds. The few times I have been busted is when they have totalled my car.

@s1taz4a3l: Yeah, you can ram them, but I find that it seems to damage you just as much (or more) than it does them (maybe it's the car I have?). There is an upgrade to increase damage to other cars, but I haven't tested it out. I do like to ram them anyway, and try and nudge them into oncoming cars, buildings etc. I have managed to destroy a couple of them. If they are ahead of me, I attempt to ram them in the side to spin them. That has helped me escape on multiple occasions.

"suspiciously Whovian phone booth". It's actually a reference to Bill & Ted's Excellent Adventure, but no doubt they got the idea from Dr Who.

Demo discs were essential back in the day. Even the video demos were valuable. When I was a kid with limited funds, it was always worth purchasing a magazine so you can carefully pick your next game.

During my teenage years, I used to have subscriptions for Official Nintendo Magazine, then later GamesTM. I always liked having something physical to read, rather than clicking links on a website. The thing is, viewing websites are free (well its not an additional cost), but magazines often cost £5 which is a bit pricey. I think it's hard for me to understand paying for a "digital magazine" when it's basically a collection of webpages. It might make more sense if you didn't get adverts, but I'd imagine digital magazines are rammed full of adverts just like magazines and the internet are.

You probably aren't an active user, so you probably won't see this...

Did you complete the game, or abandon it halfway through?

I think your comments are very accurate for the first part of the game. I was completely raging at the game's design and couldn't understand why everyone seemed to like it.

However, the second half of the game changes; it's like they had a different game's designer. It stops throwing unfair scenarios at you, and gives you clever physics based puzzles. I actually found myself enjoying it. That first half though... it's horrendous.

I loved Tomba! but don't remember that much about it. I would be definitely interested if they had that alongside the sequel.

I think Gex was a game I wanted but never actually played.

@nicosf: First of all, thanks for reading my review; it is nice to know someone has read something I took time to write.

I would like to point out that down-voting well written reviews isn't beneficial when >70% of user reviews are poor. Down-voting my review is essentially up-voting theirs. As it goes, I have up-voted many reviews where I didn't agree with the score. People are entitled to their opinion, and if they justify it, then it deserves a positive vote.

Leading on from that, you are fine to enjoy Burnout Paradise. As it goes, I didn't find it fun, but I don't seem to like these open-world games.

I think your logic for trashing Split/Second is flawed. Sequels are made based on sales, not how good the game was. Making a sequel to a popular selling game doesn't mean it is good as you have found out by playing Need For Speed Payback. I'm sure those kids in Siberia would have wished they picked up a copy of Split/Second instead! Sure, you could claim it is shallow and puts focus on the destruction, but isn't that what the original Burnout games were like? I seem to remember loving the original game, and playing Paradise made me reminisce about those times. That's why it's fair to put the comparison to Split/Second; because that captures the essence of what Burnout used to achieve.

@bgghgubcjhgknjk: You could switch weapons using the D-Pad when playing with a controller.

"One major issue was that the health pick-up button was the light attack button"

They must have fixed that. You have to press Down + Grab
