With Gears 2 coming out soon, I would say buy Halo 3, and then rent GoW for the story, and maybe play a little bit of multi as well. Gears will be just sitting on your shelf once you get Gears 2, so buy Halo 3, rent Gears for the story, and then wait for Gears 2 to come out, and buy that.
I don't know what sort of retailers you have over in the UK, but just go to a store which sells video games, and most of them have an area with old games which are super cheap, you can get some of the older games for $10-$25, and some of those games are pretty good.
You could even buy the used versions which will be under $10 for certain games. :o
The 60GB models for now don't have the Jasper chipset, there was a thread on there boards somewhere with proof. If you want to wait for the Jasper, then be my guest, but if you want to buy a 360 now, don't get the 20GB model, get the 60GB model, some stores are already selling them.
I don't think the 20GB models have the Falcon chipset, but the Elite and the new 60GB models do. TBH, you're better of buying the new 60GB model for only $50 extra as it has a lesser chance of overheating with the upgraded chipset, and you get 40GB more memory. :D
