there is no "to you" about it, a hardcore game IS a game like Starcraft that requires immense skills and a full life dedication to compete at the highest level. That is the definition of a hardcore game.

Skreltch

the bolded is what makes it hardcore, has nothing to do with the game, I beat it on easy in a day so thats not really hardcore is it?

Maybe a game becomes hardcore to the individual playing it.

The word itself means anything from "cool" to porn,... there's no set usauge for it. People trying to limit it to a certain genre of games or a particular game is

just derpy.

Cheers.

wrong! hard means "difficult" and core means "The basic or most important part; the essence". So hardcore games are games like Starcraft where a human being cannot ever possibly reach the maximum skillcap and the pro level is so insane that it absolutely blows your mind to see the pros do some of the things they do on television. The competition is so intense and at such an unbelievably high level that the players literally have to dedicate there entire lives to it. Starcraft is the most hardcore game in the world right now by definition.

1. A game or game related accomplishment with a deep learning curve, such that few will complete or master the title.

2. A game or game related accomplishment that presents an absurd level of challenge, such that few will complete or master the title, regardless of how simplistic the mechanics.

There are some other niche definitions I'd recognize as correct, but these two meanings account for 99% + of my non-ironic, non-sarcastic usage of the term.

Really? wrong? lol..if you break the compound word "hardcore" down it would be closer to what you are saying, BUT words have multiple meanings.

Any dictionary will show you that. Besides I am not a heavy SC player so it's not hardcore to me. If I lived in Korea maybe that would be different, but I don't plan on moving soon so...

Just because you think SC is hardcore doesn't mean it is for the rest of us people on earth. So you see it is impossible for me to be wrong. Thx for the effort tho ;)

Cheers.

I think the whole distinction between hardcore and casual is totally arbitrary and vacuous.

I hate using these terms to define a hobby that everyone enjoys to different extents, but I'll play along. However my idea of hardcore isn't so much what makes up the game, but how it is played.

I can pick up and play Mario Galaxy and beat it, over a course of time, and eventually beat it 100% ( Casual, I guess)

Or I can pick up and play Mario Galaxy and speed-run the entire game 100%, imposing some sort of handicap on myself in the process(don't know if that's possible to impose a handicap on yourself in this game, just saying this for sake of comparison.) (Hardcore)

I can play Starcraft campaign. (Casual)

I can play Starcraft competitively (HARDCORE)

I can quest and farm a little bit on my WoW account. Doing instances and having a jolly good time.(Casual)

Obtaining the best gear available to conquer the Heroic top tier Raids and work my way up the Battlegrounds in the rankings (Hardcore)

I can run through Mass Effect on Easy as a Soldier ignoring every codex and skipping side quests. (Casual)

I can play through Mass Effect on max Difficulty as a (idk.. weak class I don't know them very well) completing the game 100% (Hardcore)

I guess you can kind of see where I'm going with this. Agree or disagree if you like, but I think every game can be played to a hardcore or casual extent. It pains me to say those words.

Genuinely caring about games.

Squabbling about consoles and metric values does not count.

That is hardcore gaming quite frankly.

Hardcore games are for gamers who care.

A game that relys on skill and nothing else. If a player beats another it's because they're better, not down to luck.

Something like CS or quake.

I have always wondered this what is a Hardcore game to you? Is it a game with an M rating, a game with blood, guts, and sex, or IMO it is a game with a large following and decent amount of hype when coming up on release. So for example since Mario games have a large amount of hype around release I consider it a hardcore game.

I would probably just take the term at face value and relate it to something that is hard. Maybe even something that focuses a lot in something specific be it a gameplay mechanic or some kind of theme taking it to another level and being not just hard but maybe really deep.

No such thing.MFDOOM1983

This, its just a term to try and make yourself sound elite, and say im a hardcore gamer!!! That being said I would go as far to say that there are casual games like the shovelware we see on kinect/Wii etc. But how can you say, mario is less hardcore than COD? What because mario doesn't have blood and gore or realism it isnt hardcore? That sounds like elitist immaturity to me...

It depends on how you defined the word "hardcore", for me it probably Demon's Souls. You can't really just pick it up and beat it in a couple of days, so many trials and error that I have to go through.

To me, it's not the game, it's the mentaily of the player. You can be hardcore on a simple, casual puzzler, if you enjoy it enough. Or a collectible card game.

There are games the require a lot of effort because of difficulty or complexity of gameplay, which require the player to be hardcore just to get up to speed.

I was speaking of the multiplayer of course, and yes pro players spend 8-12 hours of there life training every day, the GSL league games are the absolute pinnacle of gaming skillcap requirement in the world right now, It is the very definition of hardcore.

You sound like a new fan.

Let me tell you, for your own good, that you better tone that down before BW fans club this in your face: OSL/MSL/Proleague >>> GSL in terms of skill. The unknown B-teamers/practice partners of BW can dominate in GSL with the same amount of practice. Mechanics wise, BW was way more demanding. Accept that as a fact before making claims like the GSL being the pinnacle of skill as you can infuriate some people. (MVP, Nestea, better than Flash or Jaedong? No.)

Also you speak as if Starcraft is the one and only way for a game to be hardcore. It honestly sounds quite pretentious, and make the fans look bad. Granted SC1 is probably the most hardcore RTS on the market right now, but I wouldn't call it the "requirement" for a hardcore game.

EDIT:

To me, it's not the game, it's the mentaily of the player. You can be hardcore on a simple, casual puzzler, if you enjoy it enough. Or a collectible card game.

jimkabrhel

The way you say it, it is both. A game can be hardcore/casual because of the entry bar and the skill ceiling, and a gamer can be casual/hardcore from his/her dedication.

It really is just semantics in the end though.

Games like Catherine and Disgaea, that nobody plays. Games like Shadow of the Collosus and Ocarina of Time that are rewarding and could be considered art. Games that don't hold your hand, games like Dark Souls and Blazblue.

Basically, good games.
