Now that MS plans to acquire Activision/Blizzard, does this place Sony in panic mode? Based on the transactions with Bethesda, games that would have been on PS were pulled. The same can be expected for this stupid size acquisition. Two major publishers are being pulled from the PlayStation portfolio with the biggest hitter being Call of Duty. Do you think COD is going to continue on PS? What do you think Sony is going to do in response? Release games day 1 on PC?

PlayStation is f*****.

I 100% expect them to file a complaint with the DOJ to stop the purchase.

Sony lives by the "if it ain't broke, don't fix it" business model, rather than evolving the industry. Cows have been living the high life with short-term business success, but I think most sensible people knew that model can't sustain itself in the long-term.

I think it's now coming to fruition that Sony needs to convert in order to maintain that success.

Wouldn’t it be the FTC? Why would the DOJ care?

They will respond by their own buying spree. Pretty sure they don't have the money to buy a big or even a mdeium sized publisher but they can still go with merger using equity. Come to think of it, they could also get in a strategic partnership with Amazon or Google if not outright bought by them.

That would be weird if they are acquired by Amazon or Google but it will also be the death of PlayStation if that transpires.

If this deal goes through and wasn't blocked it would serve as a precedent for Amazon/Google/Facebook whatever to acquire Sony.

"It's all about exclusives"

The narrative rammed down MS(Xbox) throats as the be all and end all of gaming by fanboys and leading gaming sites.

Don't piss yourself crying now MS flexis it's financial muscle

Activision had COD and Blizzard had Overwatch 2

So it's not too bad: Sony lost out on two games.

Bethesda and Activision games won't sell enough on Xbox/PC alone to justify the $80 billion they spent. The games will still come to PS consoles to recoup losses.

That's probably why Microsoft acquired Activision/Blizzard. It's too big of a company for the industry to just let implode over being in a poor state.

Now that the company is under new management, I'm certain Microsoft is going to purge all the bad actors and reshape the company into something better than it was before.

You don't just throw down $70billion to do nothing with that purchase.

Missed opportunity for Sony. Considering how Sony has a tango with Disney right now in the movie division, a $70billion acquisition would have been a power move for them, Considering Disney had a $71billion purchase in recent years. Sony is being left behind.

Why is everyone always super optimistic when multiple billion companies buy another multiple billion company?

Yeah, for sure we'll get another Crash Bandicoot, Spyro, Warcraft, Starcraft and finally COD will be in good shape again.

Going to need a response now or some sort of strategy, but this does seem very much like a pre-emptive move by MS in a coming service/subscriber war.

I'm not Sure Sony would actually see Amazon or Google as potential Partners, in fact if Sony went that route I wouldn't be shocked by a Sony/MS deal to head off a challenge from one of those tech entities.

Halo has flopped pretty hard in that area. People are not happy about everything belong locked behind a paywall and the player base has been dropping week after week. I am sure there are still people purchasing the microtransactions but they definitely hurt this game and probably future Halo games by burning players with this.

IMO Amazon would be well and good taking a cues from the likes Valve and Epic, keeping an eye on certain smaller games that explode in popularity as opposed to well established and considerably more expensive.

Not that money is a problem for Jeff. At least when it's not paying staff proper wages.

Remember when I jokingly said the PS5 was Sony's Dreamcast? Er... well I was being a bit trollyface but Sony does need to adapt fast in light of everything that is going on. They have a dream-team of first party studios, no doubt, but being a console platform is much bigger (now than ever) than being a publisher/owner of a portfolio of software IP.

How many games are confirmed as exclusive and then later come to another platform? Lol PR speak doesn't hold much weight when sales numbers speak much louder in the end like they always do. Even Sony has done this quite recently by putting Godfall, God of War Ragnarok, Horizon Forbidden West and GT 7 on PS4 when they were originally announced as PS5 exclusive.

Psychonauts 2 and Minecraft are owned by Microsoft yet come to PS. What makes you so sure other properties won't as well?

I still don't get the comparison to Dreamcast lol. There is nothing here at the moment that is showing that Sony is not succeeding. They're breaking records in a supply constrained market. PS4 was a major success. They just announced PS VR 2. The Dreamcast was an accumulation of failures by Sega.

yeah, but Sony didn't put Godfall, God of War Ragnarok, Horizon Forbidden West and GT 7 on Xbox did they?.. 🤷🏽‍♂️

Psychonauts 2 was already oblgated to come to PS4 due to the kickstarter funding and Microsoft already said they aren't going to pull an already released game (like Minecraft) from the PlayStation Store..

New games like Starfield and Redfall are already announced to not be coming to PlayStation.. so why would you think otherwise?..

Sony has 44 billion dollars in free cash flow. That's enough to buy both Capcom and square Enix and that's exactly what they should do.

They also have a market cap of 156 billion so good luck on anyone buying them.

@SolidGame_basic: if Sony doesn't adapt, their current successes may become "accumulating failures". The DC was great hardware and great games too...

MS is curb stomping them in services

MS is pulling out the rug from under them on major "third party" IPs with things like Bethesda and Activision (it is what it is - these are seriously big acquisitions)

MS has the more powerful hardware

MS has more features in its hardware

MS also has a more diverse hardware portfolio which has allowed them to sell (the S) despite the supply constraints affecting the X and PS5 to a greater degree

MS also has found a way to undercut them on cost for both games and hardware (for the time being)

Lastly but most importantly: MS is years ahead of Sony in embracing and integrating with PC - expanding their customer base dramatically.

Just step back for a moment - this is a serious list of "accumulating failures" PS is looking at. It really is. PS has an iron core of top tier IP and studios behind them, but again, DC had great exclusive games too and a dedicated fanbase.

Sony has to be reeling a bit here. The just have to. I hope they adapt

I think Sony need to seriously look at the Konami Portfolio and buy up some IPs, like Castlevania, Metal Gear, Fatal Frame, etc. I know there are rumors about exclusive deals with Square Enix as well, I think that really needs to happen now.

I would say partner up with Sega, but Sega's multiplatform strategy has been working pretty well for them.

Partnerships with Square and Konami are the only things feasible IMO

So, you are saying that the company should spend ALL of their resources in acquisitions just cause? This is why fanboys don't run companies.
