TULSA, Okla. - Horses could soon be butchered in the U.S. for human consumption after Congress quietly lifted a 5-year-old ban on funding horse meat inspections, and activists say slaughterhouses could be up and running in as little as a month. Congress lifted the ban in a spending bill President Obama signed into law Nov. 18. The USDA issued a statement Tuesday saying there are no slaughterhouses in the U.S. that butcher horses for human consumption now, but if one were to open, it would conduct inspections to make sure federal laws were being followed. The last U.S. slaughterhouse that butchered horses closed in 2007 in Illinois, and animal welfare activists warned of massive public outcry in any town where a slaughterhouse may open. "If plants open up in Oklahoma or Nebraska, you'll see controversy, litigation, legislative action and basically a very inhospitable environment to operate," predicted Wayne Pacelle, president and chief executive of The Humane Society of the United States. "Local opposition will emerge and you'll have tremendous controversy over slaughtering Trigger and Mr. Ed." But pro-slaughter activists say the ban had unintended consequences, including an increase in neglect and the abandonment of horses. Federal lawmakers' lifting of the ban on funding for horse meat inspections came about in part because of the recession, which struck just as slaughtering stopped. A federal report issued in June found that local animal welfare organizations reported a spike in investigations for horse neglect and abandonment since 2007. Story here. Discuss, how do you feel about horses being slaughtered for meat? It would mostly be sold overseas where it is a delicacy.

Some of the public adores horses, idolizes them due to TV shows like Roy Rogers or Mr. Ed (both very old shows), plus some consider them as pets.

I'm apathetic towards the slaughtering of animals for foods if the proper regulations are met. Except for dogs of course. Since I view them as superior to humans.

TheShadowLord07
I might be wrong since I haven't read up on this, but I don't think it is illegal to sell it here. It's just there isn't a big demand for it in our culture. For example, in Brazil it's a traditional to eat cow and sheep tongue, but I don't think people here in the US would care for that.

Jazz, dogs are a delicacy in some overseas countries. I have had to politely refuse it when it was offered.

He reminds me of kuraimen. Let's see, you've got:

  1. The broken English.
  2. Made up facts.
  3. Unexplained terms.
  4. Rarely answers a question in a direct fasion.
  5. Ignores rebuttals he doesn't feel like/can't answer.
  6. Can't get anyone to agree with his ideas.

Yeah, I'm aware. When I was offered cow and sheep tongue I initially was repulsed. But I came to accept that I was subconsciously drawing lines in the sand of what is the proper part of the animal to eat. It wasn't so bad outside of the fact that the cow tongue had a very fatty texture to it. Dogs on the other hand, well I wager I'd let visceralitytake control on that one.

I'm pretty indifferent to the slaughter of horses for their meat. We already eat other animals, so why not horses? I'd try horse meat if I ever got the chance to.

I'm not very experimental when it comes to meat. I mainly eat fish, lean pork, beef, and occasionally, chicken. The only thing I've tried outside of that is lamb, and I can't say I'm that into it. I mean, I like it when it's in a gyro, but I don't think that counts. However, if others would like to step outside the norms of meat eating, then I'm all for it. That is, assuming it's properly regulated. Oh, and I despise turkey meat. I forgot to say that I also have tried that.

Nobody wants to eat horse meat, so any manufacturer that thought they could keep it a secret would just be asking for bankruptcy.

Well that makes a lot more sense. I still think they'd be risking a big scandal in the US if people found out they were slaughtering large numbers of horses. If they also sold products here, it wouldn't do their domestic business any good.

Even though i consider horses as pets that shouldn't be eaten, i would still like to try some meat in my life time anyhow. Probably before they all force the slaughterhouses shut down by the activists.

And on another another note i do oopses eating them like we do to cows.

But you never know when they too will be ban from eating as well :-)>

This is kind of a backdoor good thing. Currently, the slaughter of horses is illegal in the US. This means that old, injured, sick, and dying horses (that farmers need to sell to lessen the loss on their investment; not have a vet put down) must be transported to Canada. Imagine having to suffer on a 5 day train ride from Texas to Canada. I probably won't eat horse meat, but I'm glad that they won't have to be shipped off while dying and can be put out of their misery sooner.

Not really, except that society has told us that cannabalism is morally wrong, but slaughtering a family of animals for food is perfectly acceptable. To answer TC, I don't really eat meat, and seeing people eat horse meat would literally make me sick. I mean, we don't need to eat every animal. Endangered Tiger anyone?
