GameSpot -- No score

"Should you get an Xbox One X? That answer should largely depend on whether you'd be happy with the console's library of games. You can check out a list of all the Xbox One X-enhanced games here. If you're happy with the lineup and are thinking about jumping in, allow me to outline three different scenarios for you. If you game on a 1080p TV and don't have any plans to upgrade to a 4K one, the Xbox One S is going to be a better fit for you. While you will get some graphical enhancements with the X, you don't really get your money's worth if you don't have a 4K HDR TV. But what if you already own a 4K HDR TV and an Xbox One? In this case, I'd only recommend getting the X if you have the disposable cash to spare for the increased visual fidelity and performance benefits. If you have a 4K HDR TV, don't have a current gen console, and are looking to purchase one, however, the Xbox One X is a great choice." -- Jimmy Thang [Full review]

IGN -- 8.7/10 (Review-in-progress)

"The Xbox One X is a very impressive collection of hardware crammed into a sleek case. It runs cool and quiet as it delivers impressive performance in the enhanced games we've been able to test out so far. It's hard to believe Microsoft exclusives like Gears of War 4 can look so good and run so smoothly on a box that costs less than half of what you'd pay for a high-end gaming PC. Plus, it caters to home theater enthusiasts with 4K ultra-HD Blu-ray playback and Atmos sound. However, the big question of how it compares to the PlayStation 4 Pro in running third-party games remains, for now, unanswered." -- Brandin Tyrrel [Full review-in-progress]

Polygon -- No score (Pre-review)

"The Xbox One X is undeniably the best console to play multiplatform games; they'll look and run better on it than on the PS4 Pro. For some people, that peace of mind--knowing that they're guaranteed to get the highest image quality and smoothest performance--will be enough to justify the purchase price. And the ancillary benefits of Microsoft's ecosystem, such as Xbox Play Anywhere and backward compatibility going back to the original Xbox, can't be discounted. But I've been floored by plenty of games on the PS4 Pro, like Horizon Zero Dawn. For now, with the limited number of enhanced Xbox One X titles I've been able to test, I haven't seen enough to be able to recommend the console in light of its high price--especially when the audience for these mid-cycle upgrades still seems so specific." -- Samit Sarkar [Full pre-review]

Tech Advisor UK -- No score

"The Xbox One X is massively powerful and comes at a steep price. But compared to the equivalent gaming PC, it's exceptionally good value for money. Right now, the appeal is slightly limited by the number of people with 4K TVs in the UK, but if you’re a Forza, Assassin's Creed or Gears of War fan, then there could be enough to tempt you. Ultimately, the One X isn't for everyone, but if you have a 4K TV that can take advantage of that extra graphical power, you’re in for a real treat." -- Lewis Painter [Full review]

The Verge -- 8.5/10

"Sony really has some impressive exclusives on the way, and it's hard for Microsoft to counter this despite its great job on the hardware. Microsoft promised the best hardware, and it delivered--but that's nothing without games." -- Tom Warren [Full review]

The Guardian -- 4/5

"Multiplatform titles will almost certainly look better on Xbox One X than on PS4 Pro, sometimes very noticeably (and elements like increased draw distance and smoother frame-rates can have a palpable effect on your gameplay experience), but is it worth the extra £100? That's a conversation you need to have with your aesthetic standards and your wallet." -- Keith Stuart [Full review]

Engadget -- 87/100

"Ultimately, the Xbox One X offers some major performance upgrades that gamers will notice--especially if you're coming from an original Xbox One. But it's also a bit disappointing since it's coming a year after the PS4 Pro, and it doesn't offer VR yet. For Microsoft fans, though, none of that will matter. It's exactly what the company promised: the fastest game console ever made." -- Devindra Hardawar [Full review]

Eurogamer -- No score

"Really, it all comes down to whether you own a 4K screen or are considering investing in one. The right ultra HD display with decent HDR support really does offer a huge improvement in many cases over standard 1080p. Forza 7's precision lines and often beautiful lighting are a world apart from the base Xbox One experience, while the richness of detail in Gears of War 4 (or the doubling in frame-rate, if you prefer) are transformative experiences. Work needs to be done on beefing up the lacklustre 4K media support, but as a top-tier games machine, Xbox One X is an excellent piece of kit." -- Richard Leadbetter [Full review]

Wired -- No score

"Microsoft has pulled off something impressive here. 4K gaming previously required a noisy desktop PC with a flamin’ hot graphics card, and now it’s something you can get for $500 that fits under your TV. That’s awesome, even if the benefit is small and only for a select few. For devotees who worship at the altar of Master Chief, the Xbox One X is an offering that optimizes the Xbox experience. It’s an opportunity for fans to re-up their membership and prepare for the higher-def, higher-dynamic range future." -- Brendan Nystedt [Full review]

TechRadar -- 4/5

"If you're the kind of gamer who stops to look at the scenic vistas in games like Skyrim, The Witcher or Dragon Age, or a streamer who can point out a 4 frame-per-second difference while looking at two videos side by side, the Xbox One X is a worthwhile investment.

"That said, if you're a gamer who just wants a console that plays great-looking games without digging too deep into your pocket books, the Xbox One X is a bit overkill - save some money and buy yourself an Xbox One S ... preferably the one with a 2TB hard drive." -- Nick Pino [Full review]

CNET -- No score

"Xbox One X lays a credible claim to the title of most powerful game console ever, but it has an uphill battle for your gaming dollar, especially if you already own an original Xbox One." -- Jeff Bakalar [Full review]

What Hi-Fi? -- 4/5

"The Xbox interface has never been better and the X’s new bitstreaming ability brings it into line with common 4K Blu-ray decks, which can only be a good thing. There's also a bump in Blu-ray picture quality and its audio abilities are more rounded. But the Xbox One X isn't flawless, and its usefulness as a 4K console partly hangs on the will of game developers. However, if you're all geared up for 4K and want the most capable, all-in-one console currently available, this is it." [Full review]

Too many people criticizing while others are to eager to buy the hype. Neither XB1X or PS4P will be much if you don't have the T.V. for it.

If your gaming and enjoying it you don't give 2 $H1t$ about other people, and what they play.

@Ravenlore_basic: Not really , you can actually use a 1440p Freesync monitor with the Xbox one X . Microsoft has already stated it will be fully supported. Plus if you have a large back catalogue of 360 games and some of your favourite games are from original Xbox and/or 360 you may enjoy it anyway. They look significantly better on the X and disappointingly there is no easy way to pop a ps2 or ps3 disc into a PS4/Pro to play those without spending more money.

The only downside for me is not having a very fast internet connection as yet (Still 6 months away for my area) . So it is taking days to update the huge 4k patches.

So far i have barely been able to play anything as still updating.

I tried Gears 3 which looked remarkably good plus a few others i already had on the external drive.

I love the whole design of the Project Scorpio and just how quiet it is.

I do have a relatively good gaming PC for 1440p with a 980ti as well but find i haven't been using it much in quite some time anyway. Mostly just game on Switch , PS4 Pro or XboxOne. I also still have original Xbox with a huge library plus got the nintendo Snes Mini to muck around on.

So much choices for gamers right now , It has just been a brilliant year allround.

@deviltaz35: it sure is a good time to be a gamer. I also have a pc, switch, ps4 pro, 3ds and thanks to MS, they now allow me to play their exclusives on pc so I sold my OG Xbox one last holiday season. I do plan on getting the X sometime next yr for another room.

I feel the benefit of playing on all platforms is always having the top games to play from each one. Never have to settle for just decent titles... Only the great ones lol.

@pcps4xb: Yeah true, i used to love PC gaming back when you could tweak things in config.sys and autoexec.bat files with Dos but never been a fan of the ever bloated windows operating system . I know Xbox now runs on Win 10 but it's streamlined enough that i can pretend it's not win 10 :) .

If you can put up with windows that's great though as PC will always offer the best overall. Finally Star Citizen looks like it might be getting somewhere too after the last playthrough i saw. Could only dream of that amount of detail on a console.

Nice piece of hardware right there! Now lets focus on some more elusive heavy hitters philly boy, keep hitting up MS's pockets for more funds. Other then that I'm glad everyone is happy with it. It shows how healthy the gaming industry is and that's good for all of us gamers.

@charlie_walker: as long as its on shelf, it shall continue to grow.

When people say no games, they mean exclusives. But its not like its shy of multiplats, there are still plenty games to play.

I’m very impressed with the console so far. The visual improvements are substantial particularly on a good 4K HDR tv but I hooked up the console to a really good Sony 1080p LED set and was able to see significant improvements over my Xbox One S. This thing is a beast. I just hope MS starts supporting the hardware with some exclusive games.

Have MS made any statements regarding games for XB1X being compatible for the S going forward like Sony did for the Pro? I don't remember seeing anything, but may have missed it.

@barcaazul: its still an Xbox one just like the pro is a ps4 so yes, you can play all the games patched or not. Its actually a multi gen platform (almost like pc). Now If it only played all my ps4 exclusives id buy one right now lol but it shall wait for me, waiting for 1st/3rd party exclusives to build up.

@pcps4xb: Personally i think eventually it will just be one box with licenced products you either purchase or don't. Having different hardware for different games is getting silly now. Good for clickbait on sites like gamespot and IGN but that is about the only real use.

My 4K TV will finally be used at 4k with all the bells and whistles of textures, particle effects and a more stable frame rate. The power difference between the XBox One X and PS4 Pro is substantial! The only ones who say otherwise are major fanboys.

@golden1elite: It is huge hey ? It is really like jumping from a 980 to a 1080ti on the PC (Not regarding framerate just ) . Diablo 3 is over 70 percent better resolution difference almost all the time on the Xbox One X in Diablo 3. So more is going on than just that 40 odd percent GPU difference.

There are two camps of reviewers. People that are already familiar with 4K graphics and have the appropriate hardware to enjoy it. They've been around for a while and have seen the evolution of gaming first hand, they tend to have positive things to say and recommend it. Then there are the others... the people that still haven't completely modernized their home theaters or gaming rigs, are intern reviewers just starting off in the industry, maybe go to school still, have small to no budgets and keep things for a really long time because they can never afford to stay current, always come up with excuses for why something isn't needed or generally don't have enough experience with technology or wasn't even old enough to know a world without a smart device in their hand. They tend to feel each iteration of tech as it evolves is "hype" or a "hoax" and never quite agree on the advantages. Don't be the latter... if you've already adopted a large 4K display, Dolby Atmos or traditional 7.1 Digital Surround, UHD movies etc... if that's your world now then judge for yourself... If you are not in the enthusiast camp or are stuck in the archaic mindset that you cannot enjoy your entertainment on more than one device, move along. The new world is not open to you.

I had a 280$ gift card so I went ahead and got one last night. Oddly enough with about 6 Wal Marts to choose from in this area, only about 6 people had pre-orders because after tying to do it "in store" it was a complete fuster cluck for WM, considering they usually always do first come first serve. And 2 stores didn't even get their small shipments lol. So the main "corporate" store had about 6 with 2 pre ordered. The other 4 were free game. ha. So I walked right back, told the guy I wanted one, and there were two in the case. He said "uhh you know it's 499$? uhh right dude". I was like yes or I wouldn't have just driven over 25 miles to get here!! Paid the small difference in ca$h and went on my way. So I didn't open it yet, but the good thing about Wally World is that you can take back used underwear, and they'll take them back. ;o) So no worries here.

while i think it was super dumb not to dump a ton of resources into a new 4k hdr IP for launch to help sell the new xox. Why would you not want the best platform to play games on less than $1000(pc)

i think the average person is only interested in so many types of games. me personally i realize that ps4 has more better exclusives but im only really interested in uncharted and horizon in the last 2 years...so if i have to make a choice to play every other game on much better hardware why would i want to play say 20 3rd party games that look at play worse just so i can play the 2.

id rather have a new XOX for 4k and the backlog of games i want to play than worry about an exclusive every other year that im interested in on ps4. what i have done in the past is buy a used ps4 and used discounted exclusives and then sell them and the system at basically the cost of shipping.

ill do the same in the future reckon....maybe.

i have a 1080ti pc.

im only gettng xox for hdr as hdr for pc broke and battlefront 2. rather play on controller against other controller users.

i may decide to take it back for refund as i have just found out that netlix is not hdr compatible with xox. 4k but not both 4k and hdr. dumb.

i guess i should probably own a ps4 pro to complement my 1080ti and not an xox.

hmm i digress.

@jergernice123: 1080ti is nice i wouldn't expect the Xbox One X to match up to that but it is closer than i ever expected it to be aside from massive framerates more due to the weak CPU for alot of games rather than GPU.

I wouldn't deny the fact that the Xbox One X WILL be the best place to play 3rd party games from now onwards...

Problem is, is it too little, too late for MS and for how long?

I used to be a faithful Xbox fan back when the X360 was facing the PS3.

Back then both consoles were head to head and pretty even.

(The PS3 and its allmighty Cell core should've been soooo much better but it ended up not being that apparent of a difference.)

So my 1st two years of HD consoles has been done on the X360.

Then Sony began having some awesome exclusives and back in the days, the online was FREE for PS3 so I decided to go for it.

I kept my X360 but decided to make my PS3 my "main" system so I could ditch the Xbox Live fees to play online every now and then.

Then came the "Next Gen" where I decided to give MS a try 1st again cause I read about both consoles and found the Xbox One to have more features and the controllers with the "Feedback" trigger buttons and the quality and feel of the analog sticks got me... (Weak arguments I must admit... I tought the Feedback triggers would be great for racing and shooter but it ended up being a very unimpressive feature...)

That and Dead Rising + Forza. At their launch, MS had better exclusives ready than Sony!

Then again, Sony came through and had pretty much EVERY game running better at better resolution on PS4 so I got one and Switched just like I did with the previous Gen.

PS4 has been my Go-to console ever since...

Now the Xbox one X is about to get released and I invested too much on the PS Store to switch again to MS.

@silv3rst0rm: you were fooled by microsoft twice already -- it is good you learned from your mistakes. the future of ps4 looks very bright indeed. there is not a single reason in the world i would pick up an x1 at this stage unless i wanted a future that was focused on the same three cookie cutter ip (you know the games i speak of). in 2017 alone, there have been well over a dozen AAA ps4 console exclusives -- right there is reason enough to stick with ps4. sony has earned its dominance in the console relm, it did not happen by accident.

@Xristophoros: From now on I'll always have a MS console to get to play the 3-4 exclusives I refuse to pass on. (Forza, Gears, Halos) but I'll just have their lower tier ones and get them at bargain!

I'll keep investing most of my $$ in Sony's!
(Consoles, hardware, Games, membership, Digitals)

My under-achieving "Day one" Xbox One sees some action only a couple of times a month so I'm not even Gold Membership and I only have a couple of games on it. (Gears, Forza Horizon 3, Forza 7, Halo5, Quantum Break, Rock Band 4 **Cause I bought a shit ton of songs back in the days on the 360 and it wouldnt make sense switching this over to PS4...** Dead Rising, Sunset Overdrive and State of Decay.)

That's all there is.

I wouldn't even care to list my PS4 lineup cause it's a very large one including digital purchases... xD
