Xbox Game Pass Will Now Feature First-Party Xbox One Exclusives At Launch

Sea of Thieves, State of Decay 2, and Crackdown 3 will be available to subscribers, with Microsoft saying unannounced games in the Halo, Forza, and Gears of War series will too.

Microsoft has announced it is expanding Xbox Game Pass and will start releasing first-party Xbox One exclusives through the subscription service. Xbox Game Pass was launched last year and offers players unlimited download access to more than 100 Xbox One games for a monthly cost. Now it seems the service will be a cornerstone of Xbox's distribution plans going forward.

The first major game to be released on Xbox Game Pass the same day as its regular release will be Sea of Thieves, the much-anticipated open-world pirate game exclusive for Xbox One and PC. When it becomes available for purchase in a traditional fashion on March 20, Game Pass subscribers will get access on Xbox One. While they don't have set release dates yet, both State of Decay 2 and Crackdown 3 were mentioned as other Xbox One exclusives that will be coming to Xbox Game Pass at release. All games will still be available for purchase normally.

Now Playing: GS News Update: Microsoft's Xbox One Exclusives Will Now Release On Game Pass At Launch

In the announcement, Xbox boss Phil Spencer also dropped some hints that the console's biggest franchises will be popping up on the subscription service too. "Future unannounced games from Microsoft Studios including new iterations of our biggest Xbox One exclusive franchises such as Halo, Forza, and Gears of War, [will be available] on the same day they launch," he said. While details about a possible Halo 6 are slim and no new Forza or Gears of War games have been officially announced, it gives fans hope that something big is coming for each in the future.

No Caption Provided

Microsoft has also announced a new subscription offer for Xbox Game Pass. GameStop and other retailers will start offering six-month Xbox Game Pass subscription cards, starting March 20. The cards will cost $60 (matching Game Pass's existing fee of $10/month), but will mean you don't need a credit card to subscribe.

"We've only scratched the surface of the opportunity this new model brings to the industry and what we can deliver to our fans. We firmly believe Xbox Game Pass will be a catalyst to create new opportunities for game developers and publishers to innovate in the way games are developed and delivered, leading to entirely new ways to play," said Spencer.

To get a look at what's available and coming soon on the subscription service, check out our list of all of the games playable on Xbox Game Pass right now and everything coming in February. It's important to note that games are not necessarily permanently added to Xbox Game Pass, with two third-party titles leaving the service soon. Microsoft also has plans to launch new, original games through Game Pass, though that is something we've yet to see.

Something smells amiss here...I don't like it. I guess if people prefer the "games as a service" model, then knock yourself out. I'd rather own my games, and have the ability to go back and play them any time I want without worrying about whether or not the game is still available "in the cloud".

@otterbee: You still have the option to buy them. Physical or digital. This is taking nothing away from people who don't want to support it.

@Zorlac: Fair enough...but this just seems like a "wolf in sheep's clothing". Remember when Microsoft introduced their "Xbox 360 Leasing program"? It's kind of like that. In the end, it's not a win for the consumer, and it's just another way for Microsoft to bleed more money from their less intelligent consumer base. Just my personal opinion, obviously.

@otterbee: Right, people don't think. They hype up anything MS does just because it is MS. They ignore the reality of what is actually going on. Instead of paying to develop games, they invest in features like this and keep their fans on the hook. This is nothing like Netflix as Netflix makes original content, which is why it has gotten more popular. Paying over $100 a year to play Sea of Thieves or State of Decay? ROFL... GTFOH. None of the games on the list are high quality for the moment. People need to look at the list of games and actually admit that they are not interested in playing none of those games or they already played them. The value comes from content, not the service itself.

@otterbee: I find it to be an absolutely fantastic Value. It's got plenty of other AAA games as well, and the pricing is just right for this type of thing.

You are also acting like Microsoft making money is a bad thing. It's absolutely not. Companies exist to make money. Without money they cease to exist, and that's pretty much the bottom line of it. At least this offers an incredible value to the consumer for the small asking fee. Hell i used to spend more than this in quarters at the arcades a year just to play street fighter and mortal kombat.

I'm not really sure what to make of it.

Seems like Microsoft is again pushing against convention.

I am excited for Sea of Thieves either way. :)

The only thing that bothers me about this service is the fact they remove games. I would happily pay but not if at some point I can't play.

Some games take me months to play, sometimes I put it down and pick it up again a year later. I don't have the time to rinse through games at 12hours per day.

@risingdawn: They have given us warning whenever a game leaves (except when NBA 2k got pulled by Take 2 randomly). They are upfront about how long you have on other games, and after almost half a year.. only like 3 games are getting rotated out. If the game is selling and being played, pretty sure the publisher and MS have no reason to cycle it out.

@risingdawn: By the time they leave the service they're likely to be reduced in price and having sales anyway, and you can buy them cheaper for being a member of the service.

Break-even for them, and still a huge cost-savings for new system owners. 3 x 60 = 12 x 15.

@Pyrosa: gold isn't required for gamepass unless you want to play those games online.

Gamepass is a completely different service than xblive so gold isn't required.

So you own nothing, they are really pushing the service angle, you can bet that the end goal is to shut down places like EB and then raise that monthly fee

Good maybe the not so bright Sony will make a decent service. Like not a laggy streaming service with a unreliable never being worked on network that's hacked 24/7. o:) At least with this we download the game and play from the hard drive. Oh and we get a discount on games with the pass so we can get them for cheaper. All for $10 a month vs $35 for a month of lag on playstation. lol

Sony sucks. Xbox ftw. Now Nintendo could use something like this too.

Some genius figured out how to stop people from buying/selling used games. This is the future and it looks like people in the comments field are cool with it. Nothing owned, just rented. Everything is a service. $120 year seems like nothing when its billed at $10 a month. I don't know how I feel about this but I have to hand it to 'em, smart. Xbox does need more games though, ps4 is killing it.

@KingKalo: 120$ is what you pay to own 2 games that you may either keep playing for a whole year or play for a week, finish and never touch again...

Gamepass is good to try games, complete games you may half-like...

But people like me will still buy titles I keep playing, like Forza.

@michellebennet: Totally. I just never buy games at $60. I always wait until they hit $40 so that turns quick into 3 games. Hell, I just picked up Witcher 3 for $20. No judgment, I just dont match everything to $60. I also PC game and the deals there are just stupid cheap.

@KingKalo: Right, and if Witcher 3 came out on Game Pass when it launched, I'd be playing it for $10 dollars, maybe $20, if you say I play it for 2 full months. I get to play the game when it's relevant, I save a ton of money, and if I want to own the game 3 years later (like you), I can pick it up then on deep discount. That's probably not me though, too many games to get too attached to too many.

@cyrribrae: Well, besides Sea of Thieves, AAA games that sell for $60 have not been coming out on game pass at launch. My main point was that I think it was a smart decision because it solves the issue with used game sales. Everyone seems happy with it, win win. When I look at the games they have offered in the past, it did not seem worth it at $120 a year. I think that may change. I think the perception that $10 a month is cheap is what drives this.

This will just serve to work more multiplayer games into existence whose sole purpose will be to propel sheep to bigger yearlong subscriptions under reinforced notions of value, both externally imposed and internally maintained. Games as services will be our downfall as a species. Of this, I've dreamt.

Now this is how you do it! Smart move on Microsoft's behalf. Before this announcement this games pass idea seemed to cater more towards the casual/on a budget audience but with this announcement Microsoft has essentially turned things upside-down.

Now even hardcore gamers might buy into this idea.

@sellingthings: 1. Price is fine. 2. Dlc is still purchasable and at a 10% discount. 3.gamestop offered you 7.99 for new releases. Nuff said. 4.because they are downloaded they will work offline. You also have the option to buy and own them forever even if u no longer continue the pass ata 20% discount. Obviously you will buy games u own the dlc for. Lol

@sellingthings: All great points!

I think like every thing else it's going to come down to one's own personal opinion as they weigh the cost to benefit ratio of a service like this.

Pros:

1: New releases (first party.) Day 1: This is a huge incentive, even to those who had no reason to partake in a service such as this. The fact that someone who is already getting a steady stream of rotating games on a monthly basis is now receiving the same big name AAA Microsoft first party title day 1 that another person is putting a pre-order on is almost enough incentive to make even the most skeptical gamer give this program a second look.

2: Price: A year's worth of the program will set gamers back a cool $120 but when you factor in what you're getting it doesn't seem bad at all. In fact, 2 brand new games (as you alluded to.) will pretty much cover the cost for a whole year's membership.

3: A rotating catalog of games: Obviously this is a good thing as it keeps new titles rolling in and the reason for having such a pass feeling fresh. This is also great for those who continuously find themselves renting/borrowing/buying older games from places like Gamestop or Redbox (although I think Redbox just has newer titles? Don't know, never used one.).

Clearly there are more good reasons to get in on this pass but for the average gamer those will be some of the main factors weighing in on their decision.

Cons:

1: You don't OWN the games: While this may not be a big deal for some the fact that you are essentially using this service as a glorified rental service may leave a few gamers feeling like they have nothing to show at the end of the day.

2: Can't sell/trade in games: This point kind of goes with the one above. I personally know a ton of people who thrive on the idea of selling and buying used games so a service like this would effectively eliminate that. Also I'm not sure how things like just borrowing games would work using this service. I imagine it wouldn't but I haven't looked into that so...

3: Most of the games will be old: While this point may not be an issue for casual/newer gamers for the more hardcore veteran gamers (like those that frequent forums like this.) a catalog of games that they have already played (or are years old.) may not have them running out to purchase this service right away. The good news is that theoretically for the cost of 2 new games one would essentially be getting their moneys worth out of this program (not taking into account trade ins/used sales.).

4: Rotating catalog of games: It's funny but this was also a pro. How is it a negative as well you may ask? (-We didn't, Ninja. But anyway.-). Suppose you absolutely love one of the new games being offered (Sea of Thieves.) and play through it over and over and over. Well, guess what? It's in rotation. So you know what that means. you could literally be playing it one day then the next it could be gone. Sorry!

Just like for the pros there are a litany of other cons that one could bring up, yourself having done a good job of stating what a few of them may entail (DLC, internet, etc...).

A service like this NOW has a huge incentive even for those reluctant to give it a shot but I think it goes without saying that something like this will definitely cater to and benefit newbies. I'll even go a step further and say that I think the 2 categories of gamers who will benefit the most from this program will be the newbies/casual gamer (obviously.) and those more geared to the multiplayer aspect of gaming.

In regards to the 2nd group I feel something like this will be more than enough to warrant a purchase as they can play single player games/first party titles that may be more story driven or have a more linear single player focus while not having to worry about shelling out their cash for something they will "beat in only 20 hours."

While I love and actually find the best gaming experiences I have ever had coming from games such as these I would be in denial to point out that everyone shares this view. In fact, whenever there is an article about the supposed length of a new game it's not uncommon to hear the sighs and groaning from certain people on forums such as these as to how they are getting "cheated" out of $60 and upwards for a "short" 20 hour length adventure. Once again, I clearly don't fit in this camp but Microsoft can really capitalize on this demographic if they play their hand right.

Will this program take off? Only time will tell. But if Microsoft keeps pulling out more tactics like this I wouldn't be surprised if by the end of the year a large portion of X box adopters take the plunge.

@sellingthings: So I just checked (wanted to make sure I had it right), dlc is still there and for the same price, if it had one. That includes 360 back combat games too. I looked at Halo 5, Gears 4, and the 360 release of Injustice, all dlc is there.

Not that it matters, but I guess game sales reports won't be a thing anymore? Hope this puts a fire under Sony's butt. Maybe they'll finally have a $99 option/year for PS Plus with PSNow included. Would be good for kids that can't play Mature rated games.(The 500+ PSNow games). This service would be a much better deal if there were some really good exclusives coming soon. Still a good deal and can be used as a preview program to see if you want to buy a game.
