Xbox Game Pass Will Now Feature First-Party Xbox One Exclusives At Launch

Sea of Thieves, State of Decay 2, and Crackdown 3 will be available to subscribers, with Microsoft saying unannounced games in the Halo, Forza, and Gears of War series will too.

Microsoft has announced it is expanding Xbox Game Pass and will start releasing first-party Xbox One exclusives through the subscription service. Xbox Game Pass was launched last year and offers players unlimited download access to more than 100 Xbox One games for a monthly cost. Now it seems the service will be a cornerstone of Xbox's distribution plans going forward.

The first major game to be released on Xbox Game Pass the same day as its regular release will be Sea of Thieves, the much-anticipated open-world pirate game exclusive for Xbox One and PC. When it becomes available for purchase in a traditional fashion on March 20, Game Pass subscribers will get access on Xbox One. While they don't have set release dates yet, both State of Decay 2 and Crackdown 3 were mentioned as other Xbox One exclusives that will be coming to Xbox Game Pass at release. All games will still be available for purchase normally.

Now Playing: GS News Update: Microsoft's Xbox One Exclusives Will Now Release On Game Pass At Launch

In the announcement, Xbox boss Phil Spencer also dropped some hints that the console's biggest franchises will be popping up on the subscription service too. "Future unannounced games from Microsoft Studios including new iterations of our biggest Xbox One exclusive franchises such as Halo, Forza, and Gears of War, [will be available] on the same day they launch," he said. While details about a possible Halo 6 are slim and no new Forza or Gears of War games have been officially announced, it gives fans hope that something big is coming for each in the future.

No Caption Provided

Microsoft has also announced a new subscription offer for Xbox Game Pass. GameStop and other retailers will start offering six-month Xbox Game Pass subscription cards, starting March 20. The cards will cost $60 (matching Game Pass's existing fee of $10/month), but will mean you don't need a credit card to subscribe.

"We've only scratched the surface of the opportunity this new model brings to the industry and what we can deliver to our fans. We firmly believe Xbox Game Pass will be a catalyst to create new opportunities for game developers and publishers to innovate in the way games are developed and delivered, leading to entirely new ways to play," said Spencer.

To get a look at what's available and coming soon on the subscription service, check out our list of all of the games playable on Xbox Game Pass right now and everything coming in February. It's important to note that games are not necessarily permanently added to Xbox Game Pass, with two third-party titles leaving the service soon. Microsoft also has plans to launch new, original games through Game Pass, though that is something we've yet to see.

In Canada games are $80, there are no video stores left to rent games from, I have yet to see a redbox and Gamefly is not available to Canadians (there is an alternative but I don't no much about them). I can't afford to buy every game i'm interested in and some games don't get demos or trials, so gamepass lets me play for a low monthly price and if I really like it, gives me a discount on the final purchase if I choose to buy it. So for me, this new update to gamepass is a way for me to try before I buy, especially multiplayer focused games as they are not my go to game genre. Games don't/won't stay in gamepass forever so buying games won't completely go away.

So basically I can just get a trial run or pay for one month or two once there are enough games out I'm interested in, play through them all for 0-20$. Good for me, there isn't a single xbox exclusive out that I felt is a game I wanted to keep anyway, but sounds bad for business and very desperate. This looks like a hit they are willing to take as preparation to fully convert into games as a service on any device rather than their console. And that is a future I'm not interested in at all. Especially if the option to actually buy the games you like is only through their store at the ridiculous prices they have, because all retailers are dead. Luckily pc is still going strong as an option, there is ample competition there hence the low pc game prices.

@moonco: Oh don't worry, people don't flock to you for the games. Ha! Anyway, didn't that van got stolen in a past Moonco vignette? I seem to recall it was. Is this another van? Or did the one got retrieved? If the latter, I don't recall hearing about the exploit.

This is pretty neat. I already pay for the Game Pass (dunno if I'd suggest it to anyone tbh) and have really been looking forward to State of Decay 2... now I get to play before I pay. I can get behind that.

@gamingdevil800: Only if the game is Play Anywhere, although that includes most Xbox exclusives; otherwise, you still need an Xbox One to access the majority of the catalogue. That's still pretty darn good for just $10 especially since you only need a month to clear most of the Xbox's catalogue of exclusives. They likely won't cycle too many Play Anywhere titles into the program at once though.

@gamingdevil800: Yea, that's true. And I'm sure MS would be perfectly happy for you to spend $10 a month to play their games on PC. Win-win, I think.

Funny that everyone seems to think MS are doing this out of the goodness of their heart. First of all, there is what, one or maybe two first party games that an individual would buy full price from Microsoft per year. So it already means they're probably going to make a profit.

Secondly, what Phil desperately needs right now is to sell consoles and rebuild the company's image. So this storyline of "here we're giving you our new games practically for free!" (I assume if there is a game you want you can subscribe to the service for one month and play the game and then just unsubscribe. Saved like 50$?)

Phil said it himself in an interview. He's thinking on the big scale. He doesn't care that much about how many games he sells in this generation, he needs to push Xbox as a brand.

So yea this is a good idea to get people to buy consoles and tell themselves hey Microsoft didn't do so badly this generation after all!

I gotta admit it's a good way to create appreciation for a console even if there are no games.

Good job Phil you're getting better at your voodoo magic of selling consoles with no games. That's why they hired you in the first place. And look at all the adoration you're getting in this forum even though this is just another way to convince people how well you're doing when you aren't!

@Keaze_:

Different topic...

I bought more than 50 games in 2017, 90% of'em prob still untouched, another 5% only start the beginning. Some game I continue on my Alienware on the plane, some I continue playing on Surface Pro during my coffee break, some... I look forward to dock a Win10ARM on my gamepad for portable gaming...

* and there's free games and 2016 games I still have no time to start.

No games? Are they books?

How many GAMES ps4 owner bought in 2017 and 2016? GTA, COD, Fifa, BF, Witcher, AC-O, Wolfenstein, etc are no games right?

Cannot agree you.

Build your lib, store your game saves in the cloud (free and unlimited + cross-platform), Phil (actually, MS) want people spend money, invest into the ecosystem.

Why create uwp that runs on win10 (pc, s, arm), IOT, AR/MR, Xboxes? Why XPA (cross Xboxes, pc, s, arm)? Why GamePass?

Hardware (esp you start your lib from 0 each gen) cannot prevent users from leaving but a "service" can.

If every iPhone and Android phone requires you to re-buy everything... people can certainly jump between platforms without 2nd thoughts.

Same reason why point card system exist for restaurants or retails.

Sure, more console sales == more user base and look better on the front, but HW's not the only thing that generates revenue.

@Keaze_: Who said ms were doing this out of the goodness of their hearts? Literally nobody.

Most neutrals are praising the move, and it's designed to make Xbox pass more attractive....but nobody thinks this is a free service.

As far as "no games" goes, it's a really tired argument, and about as valid as trolls who say PS4 only has jrpgs and all pc gamers cheat.

Good Move by MS, and quite logical when you look at all the other MS 'services' such as O365 etc, Although I don't currently sub to Game Pass, this is a definite game changer for me personally,

My only concern is how long games will remain on the platform before being removed... I'm guessing the decision is made by analysing the popularity of games with the lowest accessed games being removed maybe... Still a great idea though.

@gamingdevil800:

My take on Scalebound...

Scalebound is likely a disaster judging from the latest e3 stage demo... ps1 era programming concept in 2017... Did it even look fun? The studio is also running multiple projects at the same time... Will you give'em another 4, 5 billion dollars to run another 3~4 years? Make it a launch title for xb1x next? (Then prob flop like most ps4 j-exclusives, lose billions and get laughed about...)

The relationship with J-dev are a lotta more complicate. My friend is a Nitnendo fan, even he has a lotta hard time pushing upper level to port games to Switch. Does GK means anything to you?

Retails treat xboxes like dirt, consumers expect games (will eventually all) come to PS family and devs... it's more difficult than chicken egg loop.

My boss, thought xbox's dead already (certainly dead in Japan). GoW4 has 6.4+m active user and Forza7 has 5m+ MAU . What? I thought GoW series' dead already?

Do you know why porting Border Break to ps4 equivalent to miracle?

Do you know why console market in Japan shrinks YoY? Do you know why world wide influence of j-games dropped?

Projects go sour all the time. We took back a project (not new IP) after months of development and try to save it with our best programmers. Failed. Initial calc gave us $-6m loses. 2 options. 1. cut it clean 2. find another outsourcing to postpone the loses to another quarter.

Holy shit this is huge(would be bigger if Microsoft had more exclusives lol) I was already loving Gamepass but this just solidifies it as thd best gaming service ever. All the ppl who were trying to shit talk Gamepass before look doubly stupid now lol. On a side not though this is making XBL gold look less and less attractive though. I only ever subbed to Gold for the free games and didn't really give a damn about online multi.

Sounds too good to be true. I bet the new games are only available for 1 month. Logistically most people buy more than 2 exclusives a year so this seems like there must be a catch.

Even if that were true it'd still be worth it as you'd get a whole month to try the game and would get a 20% discount to buy it straight up. So that still comes out better then paying full price to buy a game you've never played that could be garbage.

@Marky360: You really didn't think this comment through. So you are saying it is worth it to pay for a service to basically rent games (GameFly already exists) and then pay extra for the game to own it as well? Really think about what you are saying. Wouldn't it be cheaper to just buy the game when it goes on sale then to pay for game pass? Most people buy the same games anyway so they already know what they are going to get. Also most of the games are old and a bunch of 360 game. They will never get new games day one as companies want to make money off of their games. This benefits MS only as they will make a monetary profit. Games like COD and GTA make huge money selling through retail and this would take profit away from them.

I honestly don't think you thought your comment through either that or you don't understand how Gamepass works. Gamefly is garbage comparison to Gamepass(honestly it's garbage period lol)with Gamepass you are getting multiple games a month(over 100 to be more exact) for $9.99 not just the one game so the benefit easily outweighs the price duh. You say they are not adding brand new games but this article is literally about Microsoft announcing that brand new games their exclusives will come to Gamepass day and date of the game did you not read before you commented? If you are someone like me who is already signed up for the service there is literally no reason NOT to download the games instead of rushing out and going to buy them and then whenever they ANNOUNCE(yes they announce when the game will be leaving the service beforehand) the game is leaving the service I can just buy the game with the discount simple as that. You couldn't have possibly thought your comment through.

@AlabamaFan92: Trolls are said to be able to sense one another's distress and flock together across incredible distances. A notion highly debated amongst naturalists, at least until I present today's findings. Ha!

Having said that, I'm not defending The Phantom Pain, a game which I myself found barely adequate in many regards and most definitely inferior to past iterations of the franchise. I'm merely contending with the notion that modern Tomb Raider could in any way be regarded as being more enjoyable than it. His obvious attempt at trolling is what makes him a troll.
