I think it's due to the fact that the game didn't have a really long tutorial, more likable characters, Summons were actually cool, mini games like blitz ball, better story, the ability to go back to all previous areas, actual Legendary weapons, Sphere grid, no limitations on levles throyghout the game, the game didn't feel empty with towns, etc.

I liked X, but it's not my fave.
