Despite what the media tells you, the U.S and Russia cooperate with each other on many issues, such as terrorism, drug trafficking, nuclear proliferation, and other international issues much more so than any other time in history between the two countries.
I know the atmosphere is tense, and almost Cold War like, but Russia is reasserting itself on the world stage. It is beginning to challenge U.S leadership on a global scale. It feels insulted that its sphere of influence is being meddled with by the U.S and NATO(Eastern Europe, Syria one of its longest allies in the Middle East).
That is like if Russia went to Canada and started to influence Canadian political landscape and install a Pro-Kremlin government. You can bet the U.S wouldn't be to happy. The U.S is playing in Russia's back yard (Ukraine, Georgia).
It is intense no doubt, but I cannot envision a full blown conflict between the U.S and Russia. These two countries have the most important relationship in the world. They keep the world balanced, and your now seeing Russia get back on its feet after the Cold War, after 20+ years of unmatched American dominance in global affairs. The U.S monopoly on the world will end, as other great powers are expected to rise(China, India, Brazil to name a few in decades to come).
The world is beginning to change for the better despite the paranoia the media spreads. A lot of global economies are tied to each other, the way the world functions is vastly different than say the Post World War II world.
