I mentioned this in the staff top 10 lists, but I'll redo it here:
Alexa, you really should play Undertale if you haven't. You mentioned you like story and characters wrapped in intriguing mechanics. Well, it's basically exactly what you're looking for.

Alexa, you need to play Undertale, like, yesterday! It has all of this that you are looking for. PSA: It's on sale now on Steam for $8 instead of $10.
If by some chance you have played it and it's still not in your top 10, well, I am disappoint.
My moment comes from Undertale as well. I hate to explicitly talk about it since it was so shocking, but I will say it comes at the end of your first neutral path, after defeating what you've been lead to believe is the final boss. Then....the whole game goes crazy after that. People who have played it will know what I'm talking about.
I'm a grown man and I was getting freaked out by an 8-bit black-and-white [redacted].
That whole game is filled with great moments, honestly.
River Raid for the Atari 2600! It's a top-down shmup where you were trying to destroy enemy ships and stuff, but you also had to make sure you had fuel, so you had to be careful not to actually shoot the fuel tanks in the river (fly over them instead). Sometimes enemy jets would fly in from the side of the screen to try to crash into you - if they did, my whole family would yell out "JET!". Good times.
@Gen007 They're trying to ride the preorder/hype train as long as possible. Sadly it seems there will always be enough people chomping at the bit willing to throw their $60 away.
This has been an awful year for AAA games. There was the trifecta of "meh" (Titanfall, Watch Dogs, Destiny), the trifecta of not even working properly (Driveclub, Halo, Unity), many of the best games are just "remasters" from the previous generation (Last of Us, GTA V, Tomb Raider) and the numerous, NUMEROUS delays until 2015. This game is just yet another failure in an awful year.
At least I got Dark Souls II which I loved, but I also realize that's an incredibly polarizing game.
