Recently I decided to relive my days of yore by getting an old gameboy original (nice and cheap) and Pokemon Blue. The first unit I received was scratched to [four letter expletive] and had a really odd sound coming out of the speaker; a kind of loud buzzing and a high-pitched squeal combined. I returned it for a new one. To my horror, my new unscratched model makes EXACTLY the same sound. They're totally identical, even the volume of the buzz is the same. I tried changing my batteries and everything, but still the squeal cometh.

So did the gameboy always make such a god-awful sound, or am I just unlucky? I'm assuming the former is correct, but I just want confirmation.

Gosh, why are people so obsessed about whether everybody else thinks that Steam is 'good' or 'bad'.

2142 was an absolute joke. I loved BF2, but had to return it after a week of play due to riddiculous lag issues. 2142 was a different matter altogther. EA literally tossed in a few new weapon skins, made the tanks hover and added a rather boring mech, and called it a futuristic game. I wanted lasers and aliens, not bullets and another east vs west conflict. As long as they don't try and pass BF3 off as anything it isn't, I await it eagerly.

Well Grim Fandango seems like a must buy (although I'm anxious about the controls) judging by the unanimous praise for it here, so I'll keep an eye out for it when I go shopping tomorrow. Sam and Max Season 1 seems pretty fun too, which is all I'm really looking for. I'm going to give that free version of Episode 4 on Steam a whizz after dinner and see how it plays. Thanks for the advice! I knew that Indigo Prophecy wasn't really for me.

Anybody else got advice? How well have some of the older games aged?

I have a long, boring weekend up ahead of me, and I need a new game. Now instead of splashing out on yet another shiny new FPS, I'm pretty keen on the idea of getting an old fashioned adventure game to waste time on. The only problem is that there are literally HUDNREDS of good ones out there, and I have no idea where to start. If somebody could give me some pointers, it would be great. Here are my criteria (gosh, I'm demanding):

  • It has to have comedy in it. I don't care how much, just a few jokes here and there
  • On that note, I don't want anything toogloomy, scary or lonely. I once played a terrifying Egyptian themed adventure game when I was 10 and it scared me for life. An atmosphere is fine, but I don't want anything that's going to make me shudder. I'm not a fan of horror
  • Not too hard. I'm not terribly good at puzzle solving you see
  • I want an INCREDIBLE story. I just want something deep, clever and involving
  • No Monkey Island, I've played them all

So there you have it. I think that I've narrowed it down to The Longest Journey (either one), Indigo Prophesy, Grim Fandango and Day of the Tentacle. If anybody has any experience in the genre, please divulge your advice!

I'm personally sick of MMOs... they consume my friends and leave me to play good games like RTS, strategy, etc by myself or with internet people which is frankly quite boring because the only thing people say on fps is "noob", "OMFg pwn' It's getting really annoying. I can't believe people waste money monthly on games like that.simardbrad

Heh, you've never played WoW, have you?
