The entire Police Quest, King's Quest and Space Quest series have just recently been released in compilation packs/box sets - whatever you want to call it. You can buy them at the store or online and the sets retail for $19.99. Doesn't get much better than those games.  Note that these sets were released to be compatible with XP and I assume Vista, although I don't use Vista yet.

You can get some games mentioned here from "abandonware.com", but will need to use dosbox or like.  A lot of games like lucasarts and sierra games are protected now. You may be able to buy cds online from ebay or amazon.  Great games like Monkey Island sell for quite a lot.  I'm sure they will eventually be reissued like the above mentioned games. Also, there are some independent developers that make traditional point and clicks today - not hard to find if you google and many are free.

As for games like The Longest Journey and Dreamfall, I disagree with some posters here about being point and click.  Adventure games today are the natural evolution of the older point and click games, but with better graphics and interface. The TLJ series is well worth it. The Syberia series is popular and beloved but I tired of the first one.

First of all, I generally keep an eye out for games in the genres I like (don't like FPS or anything GTA-like). I then read the expert reviews and balance them with the player reviews. I don't think there's anything wrong with basing your purchase off reviews. I find that player reviews are very important in creating a balance with the experts' reviews for the very simple reason that the experts can be wrong. Also, experts often play games before they are appropriately patched and dog a game as a result. Another issue is when an expert doesn't really get the game because it's revolutionary, too hard, or maybe just not their type of game. The nice thing about Gamespot is they generally provide their review, player review average, and external review average. I take all into consideration before making a purchase. In addition, I rarely buy a game when it's first released unless I know I'll like it because it's a sequel to a series I love - say like Tomb Raider or PoP. Again, I place a lot of value on player reviews. However, I have to wait a few weeks until the review average is stabilized and here's why.... Gamespot has a lot a very knowledgeable gamers who use the site and review games. They take their reviews and rating very seriously. However, there are quite a few gamers who review games but the score/rating they give the game often does not appear in line with the written review. How many of you have read through reviews of a game and seen some review basically rip a game but give it a 7.0 or higher. It happens all the time. Really peeves me. The last Commandos game - an FPS which was a horrible game and idea - has many examples of this type of review.

Desperados: Wanted Dead or Alive

Desperados 2 was a disappointment, although not a bad game - coulda been sooo much more. Desperados 1 is a masterpiece but may be to challenging for some. Although 2D, it's still very playable today.

Monkey Island. Few ppl even know about this game let alone played it. It was one of those adventure games that Lucasarts was fond of way back when. I remember playing that game for months on one very very old computer. Look it up and see if you can ebay it or something. It's very entertaining and funny. Give it a shot. Also, Day of the Tentacle. Lucasarts Ftw.starfox15

I think you may be confusing underrated with unpopular. The Monkey  Island series is highly rated and as for popularity, I thought it was well played back in the day.  The game sells for a high price now even used.

Jagged Alliance 3 will be using a modified Silent Storm engine. It will be interesting to see how that works out...provided the cheap Russian studio Strategy First has working on it doesn't completely screw the game up.Decado_basic
Lookin' forward to JA3...I thought the SS engine was a rumor. If it's true that will rock.

Instead of playing SS for the third time, do yourself a favor and get Jagged Alliance2. although 5 years older, it surpasses SS in every aspect. give it a try.Ark123

I do have it. It's a great game. I actually got it cause I was looking for something like SS. I have to certainly say that SS was inspired by this game as well as XCOM.  I wouldn't necessarily say it surpasses SS in every aspect, but know that's just my opinion. In it's time it was truly an exceptional game and is still playable today even though the graphics are obviously dated.  Sentinels plays a bit more like Jagged Alliance.

Silent Storm is a great TBS no doubt...... One of my favorite features would be the physics and the interaction with the almost 100% destructible enviroments.... There's nothing quite like shooting your way through a floor and jumping down behind an enemy while he waits for you to go down the stairs~ Also making people fly through windows looks pretty amazing :) Overall I'd say it's a definite "must buy" for any TBS fan.... There are mods out that get rid of the mechs later in the game since a lot of people didn't like them. SuperBeast

Good point on the mods.  Nival and a fan site have mods to adjust certain aspect of the game including the mech suits and balancing in gameplay and AI - even making it harder. I found it was hard enough, especially Sentinels.  The modding tools allow one to create their own games. Although there are some small mods out, SS game mods have not really taken off. One guy is working on one and put out a demo which I enjoyed.   I heard that Hammer & Sickle started out as a mod (not rated well but grossly misunderstood - there are some good reviews of that game. I enjoyed it and it's tough as nails)

I have this game, but I never played it. Turn-Based games are something I am just not very good at. They have high learning curve (or maybe I am just a slow learner). Either way, if the game is really that good, maybe I should try it. chandu83

I noticed your Desperados review recently, which is one of my favorite games. Although it was not TBS, I think you will like Silent Storm. It offers you a chance to really sit back and strategize your moves and attacks.  For anyone, it was worth a try, since Gold can be had for around 10 bucks. If you like it gives you just tons of gameplay.

I had all the patches installed at the time but they might have fixed by now. There were a few places where you would have to travel to the next map and when you entered it your mechs would be stuck. I also had them get stuck while moving through a map too. Also I tried to defeat the mechs through normal weapons but it would take forever and it seemed only one type of grenade (not even the most powerful I had) was able to do decent damage to them. It was a really great game before this point I wish they would have just kept going without the mechs...

Sorry you had those problems.  I probably ran into a couple of anomalies, but dont' recall.  My biggest issue was running the game when I first played it on my old computer - the game is demanding.  The game runs fine on my newer PC, although I still don't fully max it out.  Sentinels has some incredible conventional warefare against enemies much tougher than in S2. Also, you get a "penentration" factor on your weapons; that is, each weapon's penetration factor improves the chance of going through armor, obstacles and damaging a mech.  A high powered weapon or grenade may have a lower penetration factor than something else, which may have had an effect in S2, but you had nothing to gauge it by.  Nival made a lot of little tweaks to Sentinels that improved things, even the AI. The AI will kick your ass in S3. One last note, I save like the beejeesus in this game - quicksaves and then hardsaves at different milestones.
