I recently decided to play through MGS: The Twin Snakes on the maximum hardest difficulty settings, since I've beaten it on almost all the other ones - Extreme Difficulty, No Radar, and the "If you get seen you lose" option. At first I was anticipating an uber-realistic, hardcore experience. Well it's definitely hardcore (you pretty much have to memorize the guards' movement patterns) but it's too frustrating to actually be fun for me; I'm mostly just doing it for... the bragging rights? :| I'm not really sure...

So what about you guys? Do you play through games on the hardest difficulty level the first time you get them? Or do you enjoy being able to beat games with style on the easiest difficulty setting?

First time around, I tend to play on the easiest setting. Second time around, I may crank it up.

I've been wondering about that. What really makes someone a hardcore gamer?TheRedStrike
Myself, I know I'm a casual gamer. Most seem to agree that hardcore = time and knowledge. But what constitutes "a lot" of time? Where does Hardcore "a lot of time" start? And knowledgeable about games. Does that knowledge only have to consist of current gaming news, or do you have to be able to recite all of the mini games available in Lazy Jones for the C64? Perhaps hardcore is like hot and cold, and there is no official measurement you could go by, but there's a certain threshold that everyone can agree on. What's cold for some, is warm for others. 12 deg Celsius is arguable. -30 is not arguable, it's just cold. If you play all day on the weekends, but never during the week, you could be the most hardcore gamer in your circle of friends, making you in their eyes "hardcore". Meanwhile, in other circles, if you don't play every day for at least 4 hours, you're a tourist.

Too tough for me to say. If I were to go based on gameplay hours alone it would probably be Doom. Although Deus Ex did beat Doom in my top 3 games of various genres; http://www.gamespot.com/users/ebbderelict/show_blog_entry.php?topic_id=m-100-24859621

Seems like Red Giant to me. I believe I remember reading that before a star dies out it grows incredibly huge, so huge that when it time for our sun to go it will have expanded enough to consume the earth.

I still play old 2-D games, and I would play new 2-D games for sure.

If the consoles had a mascot for each, what would the mascots be?

Give some answers that look like this:

Wii-Mario

360-Master Chief,

PS3-Lightning from FF13

sinarilias
Well, I think they would have to follow a certain set of rules. They would be created by the same company that makes the manufacturer, have couple games under their belt, and have had their games sold extremely well. Wii - Definitely Mario X360 - probably that guy from Halo. PS3 - I would say Ratchet, as he spans the sony platforms, except for PS1, and the games are awesome, but he's not a Sony product. Maybe Sly if they come out with a Sly 4 for the PS3. He's not the toughest character out there, but appeals to a large PS audience, and the games are good. And I think the Sly series is from Sony.

Probably Doom. When you play a game off and on for about 14 years, you tend to rack up quite a few hours.

I remember playing a game on a 2600 at my cousins house. But I don't remember the name. I easily remember playing games on my brother's intellivision though; Popeye, and AD&D: Cloud Mountain.
