I know the complaints against FF8, but just like FF13, majority of the complaints revolve around the fact that it's an FF game and apparently they all have to be like FF7 or FF6/FF4. While not perfect (and maybe a 9.0 would of sufficed), it was a very enjoyable and had amazing production values and a great 2nd Disc.
As for GameSpot their harsh credibility goes out the window the second they overrate a game. For example, more recently Metro Last Light (though still a good game) and its technical issues, or Gears of War 3, Halo Reach, Assassin's Creed in the past (Dark Souls' scored seemed a little high too considering the games the DIDN'T get a 9.5).
I was about to give you a like for your great post until you called FF8 a "button-mashfest". It's a freaking turn-based JRPG, how was it buttonmashy? FF8's Metacritic is 90% (Universal Critical Acclaim), a 9.5 isn't really far off. Whether you liked it or not, FF8 was an outstanding game despite being in FF7's shadow.
The problem with GameSpot is that constantly underrating games and being nitpicky doesn't make them any more credible or better than any other review site including IGN or GameTrailers. It makes them look like a bunch of cynical, nerdy hipsters that are rarely happy with anything.
Although the show did elicit some chuckles from me, I noticed that I was mostly laughing at GameSpot instead of laughing at the ridiculousness of most GameSpot posters. I thought that this Feedbackula (I don't usually watch it so bear with me) seems like the kind of thing that someone who's butthurt over getting insulted would do on the internet. Just seems very unprofessional.
I can guarantee that GameSpot intentionally lowballed The Last of Us because they KNEW that it would elicit rage and get 10,000's of comments. It's the cheapest trick to get attention like what that bullshit site Quarter to Three does. I would think that GameSpot would be above that shit. But nope, I guess they need the attention.
As for the review, particularly the video review, it was terrible. It was pretty much Tom digging really deep to find the most minute of things to nitpick the game and couldn't even back up his criticisms with a fitting example. It was blatantly obvious that he had no intention of giving the Last of Us higher than an 8/10 no matter what the Metacritic was (a 96 by the way).
