Anything prior to the DKC games (around 1994 or so) is essentially nostalgia at this point. From the PS1 era onward, video game music became more legitimately good especially compared to "radio" music.
They are simplistic and have minimal production value though. Which it makes it even more impressive that people love those songs as much as they do. Doesn't mean the songs are "bad" per se.
DKC's music was genuinely good too not like the simplistic midi music of older generations and games. DKC's music sounds just as amazing now as it was 17+ years ago. *Goes off to listen to Flight of the Zinger and Stickerbrush Symphony*
