@angleslam @Clovergirl227 Who buys a new computer when you already have one? All you're doing is swapping out the parts when they get too out of date to play on the graphical setting you prefer. The thing to remember about a PC is they are incredibly customizable and tailored precisely to each individual. You can buy a rig for 1,500 that plays maximum settings+ graphical mods smoothly for 8 years before needing any upgrades to keep above 30 FPS. Or you can build a machine for $300 and play on low setting for the same period, and really still continue as long as devs scale down enough. I myself play on the highest settings, but prefer performance per dollar method, which is often the medium high cards that are priced at around 200-300.

If you want a quick rundown of costs here is a scenario. Over the course of eight years you buy 20 new AAA games for the 360. Because Microsoft subsidizes the price of the console they attempt to makeup their loses in licensing fees. This is why console games are $60 while PC games are $50. 20 games over 8 years adds up to an extra $200 due to that fee. If you play online it's $60 a year for xbox live, another $480. So in games and multiplayer expenses alone it's another $680 over the 360's life. Power consumption is another concern. PC cards are generally much more energy efficient than the 180watt load of a 360, but using the PC equivalent GPU and my Ohio average rate, assuming you play 5 hours a day it will cost another $120 over 8 years, subtracted what the PC needs. If you want a controller it's another $50, but this is subjective so the cost should be left out. So right here you're spending an additional $800 over 8 years.

@CUDGEdave At least they are up to date now. Maybe now my PC can finally get a decent workout for a few years! No more Skyrim graphics.

Thats a big reason why many PC users feel animosity toward multi-platform games, or when their favorite series becomes available for the console. The PC they invested in to play modern games is suddenly regressed to 20% utilization when a dev needs to divide by the lowest common denominator.

@angleslam @Clovergirl227 Who puts money into a PC every year? I only need to update a few components every five years, which is the length of time a console generation should last too. It's the best cost:advance time-frame for the GPU, with the CPU following every 7 years. The problem is that Microsoft and Sony stretched them out for 9 years, the last 4 of which they had been on life support and really upset PC users who felt any multi platform game would be very dated. It was the equivalent of buying a N64 but only being allowed to play games the SNS could run.

The PS4 is far more like a PC in architecture than any other console, but the UI differences still apply. PC people often get stuck with horrible oversize icons, clutter, and menus designed for a analog stick. You need large icons on a console because the player is several times further away, but on a PC it looks horrid, tedious, and slow to get anyplace. Skyrim's inventory system for example was just holding down the key until the list gradually came to the item you want. This might be the only method a controller can do, but with a mouse an inventory system has the opportunity to be much better organized and quicker to access. Out of the thousands of mods for Skyrim, the UI mod remains by far the most popular and with good reason.

You don't need to upgrade it if you don't want to, it's just a nice option. It's like a 360 owner having access to the XBox One 4 years ago if he wanted it. Besides in the long run a PC, at least compared to the 360 and PS3 is roughly 1/2 the price for an equivalent performing machine. Licensing fees, online subscriptions, and ineffective power demands really added up. Over 8 years you could pay an extra $700 in these expenses alone.

@angleslam @Clovergirl227 The consoles didn't even know what DX11 or AA was, basic features the PC had going for years. Now when they look at the visuals the Xbox one and PS4 can do they think it's amazing, but PC users knows it's just up to date.

@Razor10000 Brings back memories of the conversations we had at school during the bit wars. People used terms like bits and blast processing without even knowing what they are.
