which game was the most revolutionary for its time?

which game change/created/defined a genre upon its release? i would say mario 64 and legend of zelda oot. they were among the first 3d games that played great and introduced new feature even though controller sucks monkey shit

I'd say the early N64 games, like you said; then we also have Final Fantasy VII that elevated storytelling in videogames to an all new level. There are also original NES games, like Super Mario Bros and The Legend of Zelda. Pokemon Red and Blue was an entirely new conception of what handheld gaming could achieve at the time and the first step towards handheld-console integration. GTA III and Halo: Combat Evolved are all games that cannot be discounted for their influence.

... and this isn't even considering games like Half Life, Half Life 2, Counter Strike, Doom, Quake, Age of Empires, Starcraft, Warcraft, Ultima, Elder Scrolls, and World of Warcraft.

Probably the first Command and Conquer which was a ridiculously good game and probably still is. That and Dune 2, also by Westwood.

Half-Life would be a main one for me.

Pac Man.

Quake introduced a lot of the behind-the-scenes concepts that we take for granted. Drop-in drop-out anytime multiplayer, for instance. Before Quake, you had to sit in a lobby and start the game with everyone, no late-comers.

Then there's client-side prediction perfected with Quakeworld. The whole mod scene really took off with Quake. QuakeGL and its whole 'mini-Glide' API, etc.

OoT is the obvious choice here if I can only pick one.

If I have to name more than one, then pick any of them that defined a genre or are to this day considered masterpieces and you'll probably be right.
