No. As long as you have your PSP charged by at least 70%, you can update the firmware.

It depends on your router. The distance is not very far. It will probably workin your house and thats it because the distance is not really far at all.

I found something. It says make sure the UPDATE folder is in caps? Well on the sony website it says it doesnt matter. Just wanted to say that :) Anyways great post!
I had already put Japanese V2 onto my PSP. Now the US version is available I would like to over-write the *** version with the US version (there could be minor updates/bug fixes).
I had thought the *** version was 2.00 and the US version would be v2.0000001 or something and so the *** version would get overwritten. But that is not the case. When I try to update my *** v2 version with US v2 version it says "there is no need to update".

Kind of a whoops! to all the people on here that bragged about just d-loading the Japanese 2.0.
The US and JP EBOOT.PBP files are exactly the same size. If they fixed some extra bugs, then the size of the recompiled firware would change, I would think. Even if only by 1 byte. Even if they only added a single line of extra code that would change the size..no?
Seems to me to be identical firmware and they must have been working on 'other' stuff for the US release. Such as the US PSP-sized web site.

The U.S. and Japanese firmware 2.0 are the same. You can't update to the U.S. 2.0 because you already have the Japanese 2.0 on a U.S. PSP. It would be pointless if you could, anyways, since they are the same.

Yeah, I'm pretty sure it is. Could have to do with the site having too many graphics, popups,e.t.c.
when i go to download the 2.5 firmware (already have U.S 2.01 firmware) and i get the memory stick all set up with the PSP,GAME,UPDATE folders and i drag my firmware to the update folder and i get all there but when i go to my memory stick on my psp it says data corrupt i dont know what to do
can someone please help me out because i really want 2.5 firmware

Make sure the firmware update file is extracted and not in a .zip/.rar file.
Save the file to your computer: http://du01.psp.update.playstation.org/update/us/2005_1013_00df561c8215e42b16661ecde4c57e14/EBOOT.PBP and put it in the UPDATE folder.

Technically you do have to update to be able to play the new games, but their is a "trick" where you can trick your PSP into being another firmware version, but I can't say anymore about it.

It's not an essential update like 2.0 was. That said there are a few features....mostly security though. I always update because you never know what bug it might fix....and I could care less about homebrews.
Ask again for the same thing, but want to be sure after all this "brick" happens. I have *** 1.5 ver. I want update to 2.5. Should I download 1.51, 1.52, 2.0, 2.1? Please answer, becouse I already downloaded 2.5 and clear memory stick :)
i went on www.yourpsp.co.uk so i could get the european version of 2.5 and it redirected me to .com every time
i downloaded the 2.5 update and when i started the process on my psp at the beggining i read the terms and conditions and it said some stuff about the U.S so i quit the process and havent updated yet because i don know if its is the right version can some one help plz thankx :D:D
