Hi, I'm George from Greece. Everyone in Greece are Christian Orthodox and so was my family but my parents were never strict in those matters. We did attend church and I did like it as a child. But everytime my parents wanted to teach me something or give me advice they never ended the sentence with the phrase "because God wants us to" or "because if you don't behave God will know"
From an early age I understood that what most people tended to do was in most cases not something I should adopt in my life and that's because I learned from my parents to be skeptic and raise doubts about something if I felt like it, off course not meaning that this doubt would always lead to a negative impression. Not a biased doubt that is.
So growing up I did like the idea of a superior being watching over me (and I still do) and I wanted to conform to the rules of my society (that includes religion). Despite my efforts, I saw that the "religious" people around me where not so religious as they claimed to be. I saw people attending church almost every day, fasting (that is not eating diary and meat some specific days if I'm correct about the word), occasionaly "preaching" people about what to do and what not, being judgemental on other's people's "sins" and "flaws" but in the end they proved to be even worse that the people they judged. Furthermore, apart from the inconsistencies of the Bible and my will to read it as an allegory (I think it is an allegory), the mediums of God (priests etc) and their practice of religion made me sick of religion and what it stands for these days. I'm grateful religion once existed but I think it's out of place in modern societies. In the end religion itself never evolved willingly so as to answer to modern needs and problems and since I do not want to live in the principles of a society 2000 years old then Christianism has almost nothing to say to me.
I want to stress that, that whatever moral values I have, I have them from my parents and little do I remember religion having anything to do with that. The fact is that off course my parents were raised in Christian families but my upbringing and experiences have taught me that people on their own can be moral if they want.
So as of the moment I guess I'm agnostic (simply because I want to believe in a God, although I wouldn't be surprised if evidence showed in the future that there could be no such thing). So, hello :)
Hello Atheism Union :)
Guess I should explain some of my views. Now as a child I went to a Protestant Church but as I got older I found myself questioning a lot of the things that were preached. Nowadays I don't find myself on either the side of theism or atheism but I do find myself strongly opposed to religion. I don't like the idea of worshipping a higher being and giving him/her/it gifts to show faith.

Hello. My name is Kelly. I am somewhat of an anomaly on GS. I am 40, female and an atheist who grew up in a very religious household. My mom was Catholic and then switched to a Jehovah Witness and My dad was High Anglican and switched to Jehovah Witness very late in life. (I think so my mom would shut up already!!)
I stumbled across your union by accident but I am so very pleased that I did. You would not believe the amount of bashing I have taken on this site for being an atheist.
I'm looking forward to posting and talking with you all.

Kelly, sorry to see this so late, you'll be a great addition here, us old folks need to stick together. Would have sent you an invite, but didn't figure out your religious beliefs in your blogs. Welcome. Peace, Bryan.
Oh, I forgot to introduce myself.
Anyway, I'm a 17 year old, who lives in Middlesbrough, England.
I've been an atheist since, well since pretty much forever, I guess.
I am currently studying my A levels, in particular A level Maths, biology, chemistry, physics, and philosophy and ethics.
I'm sure I'll enjoy more debate and generally gain more insight by using this union.
Peace Out!
No introduction needed MetalGear_Ninty, but glad to hear a bit of your story. You've been a fantastic addition to the gang, keep up the great work.
Peace,
Bryan
What does this 'peace' thing mean? I'm too old for this. Wait... O_o Funky_Llama
Â
Just a habit, even as a baby eating Atheist, I always wish Peace on everyone. Except in business letters where it has to be some formal bs.

Being an atheist, would you find it offensive if someone said, "God Bless" to you? Â

I know I wouldn't. That I'm an atheist doesn't mean I can't appreciate the goodwill behind it.[QUOTE="Funky_Llama"]What does this 'peace' thing mean? I'm too old for this. Wait... O_o btaylor2404

Â
Not at all, it is meant well 99% of the time, I think. It just means someone of faith wishes me well. It's fine.

Ah, I see. It's just that I've met people in the past who were offended when I said "God Bless" to them. :)Â

Yep you did, it's late and I'm a dumbass, glad you are here.
I'm not joining per say, but I'm going to think about it. I'm simply an observer for now. I don't know if the union is worth joining as of yet.
View: Apathetic Agnostic (or Atheist) the definition stays the same.

Well welcome lancelot200, feel free to look around, try not to break anything, and your welcome to join us in the secret room anytime.
I'm Tyler, born to a military family in Vermont, but currently living in northern VA.
I was born a Christian-Scientist (dad's side) but was later communed as a Lutheran (mom's side) when I was 13. I remained Lutheran until I was 15 when I started going out with an atheist. I was also going to a school with a very large amount of atheists. When we started going out, I decided that I was agnostic. My sister (who is over a year older than me) had been an atheist since she was around 11 as well.
I guess the influence was just too much that my God-fearing mind could take, and I just dropped it during my first two years of high school.
Only recently have I decided that I am an Atheist, but I am still open to other beliefs.
Hey everybody,
Here's my story: All throughout grade school and high school I attended Catholic school. Not because I was really a Christian but because Mom and Dad wanted me to have a better education. After 12+ years of being taught by and being around people that claimed to be doing God's work, following God's teachings, etc. I realized the hypocrisy of it all. Now, I'll be the first to say that not all religious people are **** but there were certainly enough of them in my time there to make me look more closely at and ultimately reject organized religion. I just got tired of 800 year old nuns whispering in the ears of me and my troublemaker friends that "there's a special place in Hell" for them and I. I got tired of being told to "use faith not logic" whenever I questioned my theology teacher. I realized that many people just use religion as a weapon. They use religion to keep people in line, to keep people subdued and easily lead, to wage wars and kill thousands of people. To me it was blatantly obvious for all to see and as a result I dropped the church and have never looked back. For the record I believe that there is a creator, but every religion on the planet simply gets it all wrong. I could go on but I'll save that for the lively discussions I hope to have with other members on this board. Slainte!

Hi again, or for the first time to all new members. Anyone who goes into the OT and gets into a religious debate and notices posters with good points, Atheist or not, feel free to invite them here. We're glad to have you all, and all of your opinions.

Hi I'm Zach Wakeman, I'm currently living in the small town of Canastota NY. I'm 17 and enjoy gaming, reading, TV and trying to get into model kits and Go. I like science, evolution mainly I actually own a copy of From So Simple A Beginning: Darwin's Four Great Books but I haven't gotten around to reading it yet. I'm rather shy and nonvocal so I may not post a lot but I check the Atheism union every day.
EDIT: by the way I'm an atheist, Iv been one for a few years. I became an atheist for two reasons 1. my aunt(hardcore born again) 2. no evidence or logical explanation.
I'm Samuel, I live in south-east England, and I suppose I've always been a materialist, really. The supernatural just does not agree with me at all. I've studied the New Testament for a few years now at school, and it is very interesting, but the more I study the more laughable it all seems.
Welcome, Ingenemployee & _glatisant_!Â
By the way Ingenemployee, did you mean Go as in the board game? 'Cuz I play a lot of chess and have heard about Go but haven't gotten a chance to play it yet.

Ah sweet! The same happened to me when I did a project on Xiangqi, or chinese chess. I'll have to check out Go one of these days though.
Judging by your XBL Avatar, you look a lot like me... >_>Hi I'm Zach Wakeman, I'm currently living in the small town of Canastota NY.
