The unique features of the game are the ability to change Mickey's clothes to change his abilities, shop for different types of items using coins found in the game, and having the possibility to increase the number of hearts that Mickey has.
The clothing change mechanic of The Magical Quest is the selling point of the game. Mickey can change into a wizard, which gives him the ability to shoot magic bolts. He can also change into a firefighter's outfit, giving him the ability to spray water. The last outfit is a mountain climber's outfit, which lets Mickey swing across otherwise uncrossable gaps. The wizard and firefighter require Mickey to collect lamps and hydrants to fuel their abilities.
The game does not allow for any password or saving feature, thus the player must finish the game in one sitting. The game supports two alternating players. One play plays until he dies, then the other player gets a chance.
