ok so i am quoteing this from another forum, this guy explains why the 360s fal better then i could.

taken from this site:

http://www.dallasdancemusic.com/forums/rave-rants-complaints/236856-three-flashing-red-lights-my-xbox-360-a-2.html

scurffilicious

The problem came from the bidding process MS went through when trying to find a company to mass manufacture the console. The 360 uses a BGA (ball grid array) processor, which is affixed to the motherboard with a bunch of little tiny balls of solder in a grid. It seems that when a company makes a $hi* ton of electronics and imports them to the United States, the US taxes that company an environmental tax based on if they used lead based or lead free solder.

Lead solder is more sturdy, lead free is cheaper, has more impurities and becomes pliable under heat more easily. Early 360 models had the lead free solder, which saved MS money in the short run, but when everyones console kept dying over and over ...... yeah. So now they supposedly use Lead Based solder.

This is why the "towel trick" works on some dead consoles, youre just basically reheating the solder trying to make the processor contacts match up again.

This concludes our tech moment of the day.

Tune in next week when I show you how to make a thermonuclear device from items you can find under your kitchen sink.

I played my 360 for about an hour a month since getting it in January of this year (I have an extremely hectic job so I don't get a lot of time on my consoles. Handheld gaming has been a God send! lol). This July, my 360 displayed the red lights and died. Now, my 360 was out in the open with plenty of room to breathe and was kept free of dust as best I could. If overheating was the cause of the breakdown, that would indicate that the 360 is one poorly made machine. I find that hard to believe as a friend of mine has had his since launch and it's still going strong, and this boy plays about 4 hours a day on average.

So what's up with all these machines? And why haven't we demanded more than just a repair? I mean, you guys that have had numerous repairs...have you had your XBOX Live account extended for the amount of time your machine has been in the shop? Have they offered anything to you as an apology for your inconvenience? I mean, even if they offered some small form of compensation, like 3 months of free XBOX Live, I'd feel like they really value my business. As of right now, I don't feel that way at all. It took 3 weeks just to get me my coffin. Then it gets shipped via ground with Purolator and gets to Toronto's repair center after 7 days. Now it's been 5 days since my "repaired" 360 has been shipped back and it's still not here. Other companies use Purolator air service for a one to two day return time. On a positive note, it only took 2 weeks to repair.

Sooooo, if I decide to sell this thing and get a PS3, is the warranty carried over to the new owner or are they really SOL?

GTA_Edm

sounds like your 360Sh*t to say the least. ive herd people in forums say that they got a 1 month live card or a free game in some cases for their troubles. but these were cases where the repair took ove 2 months. but most console issues are not really from over heating but from the constant hot cold hot cold cracking the solder joints that connect the CPU GPU and RAM to the board. (ive read this on forums from the type of people who do nothing but mods on their 360 in there parents basment, so i tend to believe them) aparently M$ used a non lead type of solder that cant handle temp change well.

what should i do my 360 is freezing a lot and sometime gets 3 red light should i buy a coolfan if so which onegearsofgta

at this point there is no cooling fan that will help you. if it freezes all the time and goes red death, there is a solder piont either on the GPU or the GPU memory that has cracked. it will only be a matter of time before all you get is RED DEATH. if you leave the console on for about an hour or so and then turn it offor a couple of minutes it "MAY" work better when yoou restart it. (when you leav it to warm up the cracked solder joint might expand enough to reconnect, this will only be tomporary call M$)

Ive not read through all of this so i don't know if this has been answered already or not but even if you bought your 360 before the 3 year guarantee was issued by Microsoft, do you still get the 3 year guarantee?? Or am i still stuck with the 1 year which expired about 3 months ago.....zanyapocalypse

there covering every console with the 3yr war. from the manufacturing date so right now there isnt a 360 thats not covered

Well iv just found out i can join in the fun!!! I got the e74 message with the bottom right quadrant going red(just out of intrest does anyone know whether the towel wrap trick works for this)Melfencik

just checked the websit i linked at the top of this page. quote: E74: There is a 90% chance it's a scaler chip problem (the "ANA" or "HANA" chip near the AV cable connection) it can also be caused by a faulty AV cable so check that first. In rare cases it is a problem with the GPU. end quote.

as long as you issue isnt anything to do with the dvd drive the towel trick should work but its a huge fire hazzard, go to M$ first

Well the day has finally come. It seems as if my 360 is dead, but with out the patented RROD. It just happened about an hour or so ago when my nephew and cousin were playing Madden 08. They had just turned the console on and didn't even get past the first quarter when the game froze. So I turn the console off and check the back of it, and it's hardly warm...

So I tell them to leave it off for a few mins, then turn it back on, and the game freezes before they can even start a game. I wait a few more mins, put in Forza 2, and the game freezes in the career mode screen. Finally I am just sitting on the dashboard looking at the status of the NBA Live 08 demo and it freezes again, so I will be calling Microsoft first thing in the morning to have them ship me a coffin. Luckily my nephew also has a 360, so I won't be missing out on Eternal Sonata next week while mine is being operated on. I still plan on getting an Elite sometime this year, most likely around Christmas when I can find a really good deal (Black Friday?). Hopefully by then the Falcons will be out too...

CryingFreemanYo

as far as i know (check with MS) only a red death problem will be repaired for free under the new 3yr warrenty. my 360 did the same thing as yours but eventually went red death after a few restarts. im going to guess your 360 will go read death and that when it does you will get a 0102 as a secondary error code. i know this might sound wierd but leave your 360 on for a while if it warms up the cracked solder connecteon thats probly causing your problem will expand with the heat and reconnect. (google towel trick it will fix your issue but use it at your own risk kind of a fire hazzard)
