@wiouds: I enjoy both myself whether it be action or typical turn-based.

I find action RPG to be commonly never as good as other RPG. The action elements are what hurts the game.

I think action RPG's are fine as long as the game is STILL an RPG. Fallout 4 being the example of action gone too far that you can hardly call it an RPG. Don't get me wrong, Fallout 4 is still a good game but i don't consider it an RPG.

Oblivion was good, Skyrim got dumped down a bit in favor of more action oriented game play but its still fun and its still an RPG.

True RPG means all number games and strategy not how good you are with a rifle or sword (that's what FPS and adventure games like Farcry are).

For me a RPG is more about role playing game play. This includes meaningful player control character growth comes from and that includes gear, stats and abilities. Respecing does ruins it.

This lead to what your character(s) is good and bad at. The problem with the action elements is that it more about what you the player is good at. It is hard role playing a character when they are actively diminishing the same character.

@wiouds: I enjoy action rpg's, but will admit I miss the days when turn based play was the most popular. It's nice to know another Ni No Kuni is coming out. The first one was an instant classic.

I didn't like the story but I'm happy you enjoy it. One of the worse part is there a people trying to claim that turn base part of gaming is now out of date.

Not action. That just hurt the RPG. I can not think of a action RPG that I would place as a top RPG.

The problem with Skyrim and Fallout 4 is the action elements they added to the game play.

I hate to say this but many of the current RPG are a down grade when you compare them to older RPG

Right now the only hope is paid mods.

Agreed, most of the old school stuff is coming from Obsidian or Larian these days, even in new Fallout games Vegas was the best IMO.

PoE was fun so was Tyranny.

Divinity Original Sin was fantastic and 2 seems improvement over 1 in almost every case.

In action RPG's, Dragon's Dogma: Dark Arisen was one of the best new RPG i have played in a very long time, i do hope we get sequel to it some day.

Bethesda's RPG's are good only due to their superb modability and replayability and well anything coming from CDprojektred from the last decade is pure gold.

I would love paid mods by Obsidian. New Vegas show what some paid mods can be like.

I think Bethesda is good at crafting the world itself. IT is a shame they been reducing the role playing in them.

CDprojektred... I think they are bit to praised but I did quite The Witcher 3 because I did not enjoy it. I just do not like the way the game play.

Xenoblade Chronicles 2 will be my RPG sweetness for this year.

I only played Xenoblade and I did not like it. I find action RPG to be poor as RPG and as action games.

Paid mods are a no-go IMO. I love the concept of a good creator to have a patron account, but forcing people to pay is just wrong. Especially with most of them doing it to get a step into the gaming industry anyway.

Is it wrong to force people to pay for indie games?

I don't know, do you like Pink apples as well?

What do indies have to do with Mods? Let's face it, most mods are either some cheaply done trainer or some protected property being "ported" over to a game. And sure, I love to run around with a light saber in every game, but really, how does that compare to entire games?

I do agree though that there are some really great mods around that are more than "You are invincible" or "gravity is 10% and you look like a Teletubbie" and for those I probably would be willing to actually pay. But once you open the door, you will be at the point again where people start reselling free mods under a new name to make some quick money and we will see stupid stuff like "the trophy unlocker" for 5 bucks.

Third party support or paid mods offer everything that the indie game scene offer and I can see them offering more. I find it hard to see a real different between the two.

Who do you think will make these paid mods? It would be the small devs that makes them and those devs work on indie games. I would love to see what can be done with skyrim with a full time dev making a total conversion for it. Just think of what could be when they do not need to reinvent the wheel and instead focus on what they want to do. I know many love the ideal of innovation but this could push gaming to new ideal while keeping the polish of higher tier games. How could I not like that ideal?

As with any market there will people trying to scam others but you can not just pick the most exterem cases and say that is what the market will be after it goes into a more settled state. I remember indie games that were copy of free games being sold. Kickstarted had a man sell dice he claim to need more money to finish but it turn out a company was already making it.

I say let it goes and see what happens.

We already know what happens. Last time there were paid mods, it was flooded by crappy mods you had to pay. Just look at Steam what happens if you open the gates. Steam gets flooded with asset flips. You can buy the exact same game 100s of times on there.

Sure, I agree that in a perfect world this would work nicely, but I doubt this'll happen here, sadly. I'd rather have good mothers building up a patreon and getting their money there. There already are people making money that way and so far it works perfectly fine.

It is foolish to think what the very start is what it would be like later. As I said before the indie game market when it first came out was flooded by crappy game and now there are many loved indie games. Paid mods came out and people just beating it before see anything like a settled market. We also know it can be a good thing as the video I link talk about where it been used and is a good thing.

I don't think it working and it does not allow small companies a real chance to work on mods. I just do not think that patreon is good enough.

Well at best it like a green apple compare to a red apple unless you want to keep dying them pink.

The only thing that is garbage is the way many just whined about it. With no true proof we have people going on a witch hunt. From what I heard and reached about them and how they affect the flight sims, they offer

Do not whine about this if you have ever talk good about indie games!

Nothing really stood out.

Anthem looks dull.
